jlag Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Anybody got any idea how bad the ticks are there currently? With the late season warm up i wonder if they'll pick me up and carry me away. maybe i can get one of them to rope gun for me? any help would be great, thanks Jlag Quote
curtveld Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Not bad at all. Was there last Fr/Sa/Su with a group of four and encountered a grand total of one. Hopped on my pants at the Oasis - none from Royal Columns or the Bend. Nearly stepped on a rattler near the base of Mushmaker though! Quote
andyf Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 I'm out of commission awaiting shoulder surgery, but explored some new areas on Tuesday. Found 4 ticks on me (none attached). I was high up in the drainage, though, and crashed through a lot of heavy brush. Had many more encounters with elk/deer/cattle. And chipmunks. Quote
Plaidman Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Forget about the ticks. Watch out for the ssssssnakes. I saw one rattler and maybe a king snake. Other there almost stepped on a rattler on the trail. I ain't going back till it cools down. Quote
sws Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Tons of ticks and snakes out this year.. I think it is best to stay away from the Tieton. Andy whereabouts were you checking out up there and did you see anything that looked good? Quote
kevino Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Andy, I remember a while back I think it was you posted a link to another forum discussing some new route development...either at the bend or moon rocks or something like that. I know that is a really vague description, but does that ring a bell at all? Thanks. -Kevin Quote
sws Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Kevin, The new crag is called the Chunkhouse and is located next to the Moon Rocks. Andy posted some beta about the climbs on the edgeworks climbing gym forum. Quote
andyf Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Not your gaveling shoulder I hope! No, I'm usually the one getting gavelled at. Left shoulder, rotator cuff and labrum tears. Surgery in a little more than two weeks. Hoping to maybe climb again in 2010. Quote
andyf Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Andy whereabouts were you checking out up there and did you see anything that looked good? Yes, it was a really nice day. Thanks for asking. Quote

I posted beta on the Edgeworks site about some new routes at the Chunkyard (just east of Moon Rocks) and a few other cliffs. Someone else cross-linked to cc.com. I'm too lazy to hunt it down right now, but PM me if you'd like me to send it directly. Hope all's well Kevin. Quote
kevino Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Thanks for the responses! That was enough info info to use google to find the info. Hopefully I'll be able to check them out before long. Quote
miladugga Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 Visited the Chunkyard a few weeks ago- some really fun climbs. Thanks for the work to develop that. Quote
jlag Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 Ticks none, Rattlers around. Coming from someone that DOES NOT LIKE Rattlesnakes it was tolerable. But, snakes were quite present. They love the lower boulder area approaching on the trail to The Bend. Some big fatties just lounging on the trail. The best was the "flying snake". I kinda recall just seeing a post not too long ago about flying snakes. Well, this morning i witnessed that first hand. While Frankie was going up cool crack at The Bend, a snake(not rattler) literally hucked itself off of an 70 foot cliff. Missing him by 3 feet, and me having to yell "SNAKE" from the bottom. Classic good times. The snake slithered away. weather was great, no crowds at all, climbing was great and MORELS are going off. JL Quote
kevino Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 So are any of you guys available to climb mid-week? In the mornings? Quote
sws Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Kevin, there are a few of us that get out in the tieton about 3 times during the week usually around 3:30 or 4, if your intrested shoot me a PM or give me a call at 509-952-2814. Sam Quote
kevino Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 3 ticks (1 in my chest) and 4 rattle snakes were encountered yesterday! Got to love the wildlife in tieton! Quote
mountainmatt Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Been up there three days this season, no ticks, no rattlesnakes. Then again, I have never seen either at Tieton. Leavenworth on the otherhand... . Quote
Drederek Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Brought one home from the royal columns a couple weeks ago. They're the big ones there - easy to spot if you look. Didn't get to see any snakes Quote
Buckaroo Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 If you're thin or anemic you better take a couple extra bags of blood so you can set up an IV drip if necessary. Quote
Buckaroo Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 a snake fell 70 ft and it didn't get hurt? Quote
Sherri Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 a snake fell 70 ft and it didn't get hurt? They always land on their feet. Quote

Drederek Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Was at the cave most of one day, then moon rocks and went to rc the next day. I've seen more snakes at the cave than anywhere else around there. Did get to see this guy tho... Quote
kevino Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Yeah those ticks are arggressive this year!! Quote
