Ronald Reagan is Sarah Palin's godfather.

The Republican party - with Ms Palin to the fore - is currently decrying the huge deficits being run by the Obama administration. But this is a recent conversion. Ever since the Reagan years, the Republicans have been the party of deficit spending.

Financial Times Article

The real Reagan was, in fact, rather more pragmatic than the "Reagan myth" that sprang up after he left office. Real Reagan was willing to raise taxes in extremis , and became a firm believer in arms-reduction talks. Today's American conservatives, who claim the mantle of Reagan, would regard these ideas as treachery and weakness. Reagan was ultimately a successful president. But he left behind a poisonous legacy for the conservative movement.

"ruined conservatism"? was it ever different?

conservatism always was for unfettered capitalism. Nothing new, just regression to a former state favored by plutocrats as soon as they could get us there.

Ultimately a successful president? In what way? He was a disaster, and an extremely unpopular one, to boot.

People who conversed with the former president recall that Reagan manifested signs of debilitating Alzheimer's disease as far back as 1983. While his wife, Nancy, rightfully receives credit for helping to conceal his presentations of delusional memories, I think Ronald Reagan might deserve credit as the most successful Alzheimer's victim ever. After all, is it not quite an accomplishment to make it as president while crippled by such a disease? Surely, while it is arguably true that Reagan was but an amiable dunce to start with, for him to continue to hold office while his brain was turning into cabbage is remarkable.

In regard to whether or not Reagan's courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease somehow makes him ultimately a successful president, I suggest judgment be left up to fans who might be more intimately aware of the special challenges he faced. To provide such an evaluation, maybe one or two of the locals are qualified to volunteer.

Yes, Ronald Reagan should be a real beacon and an example that even those with special needs can one day be a US President. In fact, given the great promise America's political landscape is currently showing, I don't think there's any reason not to start campaigning now! TRIG THE IMPALER IN 2048!!!!
