strabes Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 wondering about the approach. book indicates a path going up the ski slope and approaching the climb from the south. online sources say hike up the main trail to source lake and approach from the north. which?? Quote
Dirtyleaf Posted June 13, 2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Whatever you want. Taking the main trail past source lake is pretty simple though. Quote
Bug Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 The most obvious route to the Tooth is up to Source Lake via the main trail. Follow the trail out into the opening where you can look across the basin and up the talus toward the Tooth. From there you have a few choices all of which have pros and cons but are approximately the same. Drop to the lake and across foloow the trail part way around the basin, split the difference. At least this way you get to look at what you are about to do. Have fun! Quote
genepires Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I have never done the approach from the ski area and south but I have done the source lake approach quite a few times. From the vantage point of the tooth, the ski area approach looks like it would require more up and down to get to while the source lake approach is simple. Maybe I am wrong about the ski area approach? Quote
mattp Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 I've done both approaches. You can traverse around from the ski area without a huge amount of up and down but I think it is easier to travel in and out via Source Lake. Quote
ScottP Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Going out via the ski area (Great Scott Traverse), you can opt to follow the gentle ridge top over and tag Denny on your way out. Quote
