Sonics won it all It was great, horns blaring and people happy. Seattle was still a small town.

But the '78 series was even better for basketball, it was a battle like I've seldom seen in the Finals. The Sonics steamrolled the Bullets in '79.

RIP Sonics, Sam, DJ, and several others

I listened to almost every game of that season on the radio. Later I went on to work at the same company as "Downtown" Freddy Brown.

Here are the names I remember:

Downtown Freddy

Gus Williams

Dennis Johnson (and another guy with the last name Johnson)

Jack Sickma

Sonics?

Come on idiot, didn't you ever wonder how your coach Nate got his nickname "Mr Sonic"?

How's your PCL team doing? I bet you can hardly wait for the excitement and professionalism of high school football

Ahhhh, I get it. Congratulations. You bought into the "IT'S YOUR TEAM" mantra that the league would have you repeat so that they can fleece you even more? LOL! Well, this may be a surprise to you but it's not YOUR team. It was not even Seattle's team, as you found out. The Trailblazers are Paul Allen's team, and are just one more money making enterprise for a billionaire: one who has already declared bankruptcy once to f* over the bondholders who lent him the money for the stadium.

It's all about money. Big money. Your money. Bet they never even sent you a thank you note.

Ha...its your money too Bill! :poke:

the 79 team was my team. and it didn't cost me a cent to listen to the radio that year. except my brain to radio advertising. it was a lost cause anyway though.

Fuck you Bill,

I used to bled Sonic Green and Yellow, BITD. Jack made $80K that year. The Sonics were the last true blue collar champion basketball team.

Next year Ervin and Larry showed up, and it all started to revolve around individuals (at least in the eyes of the media). Magic, Larry, Michael, Chuck, and Carl were great players, but they heralded in big money.

A couple of things I remember about that series and era. I was as lit up as I've ever been the night the Sonics won the championship. A bunch of us had a helluva great time in Downtown Seattle, in the area where the convention center is now. Remember the "It's not over until the fat lady sings" quip from Dick Motta? One of my favorite banners hung up at a game during that series: Wes Unseld is the fat lady".

Good times.

Well shit Mark, the average college player makes a lot less that $80K even if you calculate the price of the free poon dude (think Shawn Kemp in college here) must be getting. This mythical blue collar thing is still there for you to watch and support.....WAAAZZZZUUU!!!!!!!!!!

unless you think I'm just a jaded cynic on all this pro stuff, truth in advertising is that I've been a 1/2 season ticket holder of the Trailblazers for 2 seasons so my boy and I could hang together. He went off to college and I haven't been going to games. Mostly cause my wife, bless her heart, bought the cable package and we get 47" high def.

Now, if you're still cranked about the high cost of doing business, I'd steer way clear of Peter Puget and the Mariners, cause $80,000 is less than they pay the ball boyzs these days I'd bet. LOL!
