anyone ever been? how long a drive from seattle? time of year for climbing? any guide available? a bunch of harder sport climbs there, from what I hear, and a bit steeper than smith?

Yes, 8.5 hours or so, probably spring and fall. Not much guide info except the link above. There are a buch of crags all round the area that look good. Floated the lower Owyhee this last May and scoped some lines. While most of the rock in the lower Owyhee Canyon is total choss, there are some fairly sane looking lines with defenite potential for some aid and trad besides weld tuff Leslie Gulch festivities.

If you can get in touch with Tony Yaniro he would probably have some good information for you. It is my understanding that this area was his little design project. He lives in Bozeman, Mt, maybe look him up in the yellow pages.

thanks for info all, looks like ya had a fun float trip shapp! (we went down the john day river a couple of years ago. super fun stuff!)
