I think using DNA use to catch the bad guys is a good idea and surely more reliable than fingerprints alone. I just don't like the big bro society we are heading toward and this thread topic seems like one more chipping away toward an Orwelian society where big bro has ultimate control over the masses.

orwell's society was one where the citizens couldn't complain though, one where the very language spoken rendered political speech impossible, and that was the foundation upon which everything else in his dark vision stood - americans have been bitching and bitchign and bitchign since at least de tocqueville's time, and there's no sign of that slacking nor any government program that will be able to stop it. times and technologies will change, and we shouldn't necessarily fear them, so long as we continue to rudely inspect and bitch about them all. paranoia is a healthy instinct, but then cancer is also a result of a healthy bodily function can too far, no?

especially in the lower GI-tract of even-toed ungulates of the Ovis genus. :grlaf:

is this a fancier way of saying bullshit? i was not immediately making the connection between me and members of the artiodactyla order...

no, it's just a fancier way of (jokingly) accusing you of having predilections similar to those of Dru and his countrymen. ;)

well, after reviewing the list of creatures in said order, the only one i felt a slight movement south of the border for was the vixenous central asian red deer - i've always had a thing for asians :)

THere are several concerns when giving the government any type of personal information:

1) What will they do with it? Can they sell it or give it away, say, to private corporations? Share it with other nation to restrict future travel? Use it to hinder or prevent domestic travel, such as flying? Use it to deny employment or benefits?

2) How do they safeguard it? Are enough safeguards in place to prevent identity theft or misuse?

3) When will the information be removed (say, upon acquital), or, once it's there, is it there forever? How can an individual be sure removal actually occurs?

4) What are the possibilities of error? Is the government using the latest database, verification, and security technologies and practices, are is it just a bunch of technically illiterate bureaucrats working on poorly funded aging crap built by the lowest bidder?

5) How can the individual be sure that the information will not be used to harrass, chill, or prevent the political or otherwise legal activities of an individual or group?

6) Is there a less invasive, risky, or expensive way for the government to achieve the same practical end?

7) Is the government really out to get you? Has the government finally come for you, your town, your family, your religion, your hunting license? Does this make you want to kill, kill, kill, and keep killing?

Ivan we probably agree on more than one or two things but I don't agree with what you say here. How could we really know or measure the stifling effect of the "chill wind" (to steal a phrase) that may be upon us? What I mean is we have now come to find out that the government apparently conducts covert warrantless investigations of its own citizenry that include things like tapping email and phone calls, searching your medical, financial, even your library records. We've heard that ALL calls over seas and probably all phone calls in general are now electronically "screened" for catch words. We hear that probably all or a large percentage of internet traffic and email is monitored and recorded and searched for catch words and phrases or suspicious patterns of activity. The government can now prosecute many groups under a "terrorist" heading that have nothing really to do with what most of us think as "terrorism". The sentences then become exceptionally harsh. The government can now hold people in jail indefinitely under the guise of protecting us from said "terrorism" (how ever they define that). The courts have made it easier and easier for the cops to stop and investigate people with little or even no probable cause as we once new it. In this age of "Diebold" and of media consolidation, of credit score rated housing and employment, of red light cameras (soon to be 'speeding cameras'), how can we really say that we aren't already intimidated into just going along with it all? Personally, I don't hear that much actual "bitching" going on these days.

perhaps my time in spray has given me a false sense of the volume of bitching out there? :)

i've heard plenty of folks angry over the patriot act and all it has entailed - i saw the ny gov got nailed as a result of the governments exhortation for banks to inspect the finicial transactions of their customers - i heard on the radio (humorously) that the red light cameras have actually been a bit of a disaster for localities in that they've been so succesful in getting people to stop running lights that they've lost a significatn revenue stream through the tickets written for the offense, prompting many areas to contemplate taking them down! if they put up speed cameras, i will support a GUERILLA INSURGENT IED INTIFADA to destroy them all! (let's see if this thread gets read)

if i'm the metaphorical frog, i reckon the water's luke-warm currently and figure about the best i can hope for is to keep it right around this temp - getting it back to frigid is probably neither possible nor desirable - i clearly don't want it much warmer (and this from a man who's had The Man show up on his doorstep b/c of something he posted on this very site! true story))
