Couloir Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 I watched this tonight with my almost 12-year old son. What a powerful film. The men that went to war and fought were amazing and deserve the utmost respect and honor. I feel equally about the men and women serving this country today. Quote

Jim Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 Couldn't help the comparison while watching it and thinking about the current waste of lives, money, and world standing. Quote
rmncwrtr Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 This series got a great review on the radio. Glad to hear it lives up to it, Coulior. It comes out on DVD in early October. Sounds like the perfect gift for my dad Quote

Couloir Posted September 25, 2007 Author Posted September 25, 2007 In keeping with the spirit here. I love you Eric. I watched the second installment tonight. Again, an incredible story. To head into a fight, where the vast majority of your buddies have been killed in previous, similar fights, and have the courage to pull it off, is truly amazing. A feat I'm certain I would have trouble accomplishing. Let me also add, the Norah Jones song, American Anthem is a truly beautiful piece of work. They played it at the end of the first episode, but you should find and listen to the words. They're perfect. Quote

ivan Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 for some reason i've having a hard time getting my wife to watch more than 2 minutes of it... i haven't seen enough to have a real strong opinion yet, but so far i think i'm liking his civil war series better - they're different beasts to be certain, but i prefer the narrator more in the older show as there's more dramatis to his voice looking forward to watchign the whole thing w/ my history of war class! but can a room full of teenage boys possibly keep their attention so narrowly focused for 14hrs??? Couloir Posted September 25, 2007 Author Posted September 25, 2007 It is indeed long. Tonight I believe they'll be getting into D-Day. Should be a good episode. Quote
murraysovereign Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 I like Burns' work, especially his Civil War series. He does a good job of personalizing what is, on the face of it, an utterly impersonal phenomenon. By choosing to focus solely on the American involvement, I think he's losing some of the greater context (it was, after all, a "World" war, not just an American one), but that's an understandable editorial decision given the magnitude of the task of trying to cover the entire conflict. Besides, the "World at War" series from the 70s, narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier, already did a pretty good job of that. So far, thumbs up. Quote
