underworld Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 what's the justification here? confused not allowed to implement a law that would fine businesses that hire illegal immigrants and penalize landlords who rent rooms to them so call them illegal, but don't do anything about it. Quote
high_on_rock Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Only the feds have the right to do anything about it, doesn't mean they have to act upon that right. Quote
underworld Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 if the feds are already calling them illegal...how can they prevent locals from calling them illegal too? Quote
underworld Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 the feds are saying "you can't make laws against these people" even tho they are already illegal per the federal law. Quote
archenemy Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Then there are already laws against them. What are you advocating, that something can be illegal twice? Quote
underworld Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 no...but they are saying that the locals can't enforce it Quote
underworld Posted July 26, 2007 Author Posted July 26, 2007 and i'm not so much advocating...as i am asking how it makes sense. Quote
gertlush Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 It's not so much to penalize the immigrants as the people who are exploiting them is it not? Quote
foraker Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 (edited) The point is local or state governments don't have the constitutional power to decide immigration issues or make laws pertaining thereto. The court is basically whacking down the mole of local governments charting their own course on the matter. How do you decide the fate of illegal immigrants if states and cities start making their own laws on such things? What if you entered into one state that said you were legal and then moved to another state that said you were illegal or vice versa? Laws exist to fine employers of illegal immigrants. They simply aren't well enforced (lack of man power, lack of political will, lobbyist/industry resistance). Edited July 26, 2007 by foraker Quote
fig8 Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Yeah, those fucking illegal immigrants. Send them fucking back where they came from. We got ours, there isn't room for anybody else. Quote
selkirk Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 I imagine it's something akin to foreign policy, where only the fed's have the right to deal directly with other countries (and by extension their citizen's). While I imagine state's may be able to work under the aegis of the federal government, any actions need to be through them and have the fed's blessing. And apparently this does not. of course I could also just be talking out my Quote

ashw_justin Posted July 26, 2007 Posted July 26, 2007 Fines? That's their big idea? There must be some more intelligent way of applying local jurisdiction to confront this issue... Quote

I'm not talking at them, I'm talking at posters in this thread, and I'm guessing many of them are white americans... and I think white americans that want to keep others out of 'our' land are hypocrites. What dues did you, personally, pay? If somebody followed the rules (paid their dues), that doesn't mean the rules shouldn't be changed. Quote

You could build an outdoor amphitheater without any concern for noise, without providing infrastructure upgrades to handle stormwater run-off and increased traffic....it's a veritable goldmine and a social homerun. Why hang out with Eddie Money when you could get Sting? Quote
