Couloir Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I listen to World have your Say on NPR everyday. It's a BBC program and each day they read letters from people and devote time to his release. This is good news. Quote
Fairweather Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) i think they're trying to gain some legitimacy. Did they let Daniel Pearl go yet? Edited July 4, 2007 by Fairweather Quote

ivan Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 i think they're trying to gain some legitimacy. Did they let Daniel Pearl go yet? yeah - years ago - in 2 pieces as i recall, no? Quote
Fairweather Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 You're the cheesedick celebrating because some muslim terrorist thugs threw you a bone. One they kidnapped, for God's sake! The guy's alive - and that's good - but probably a few hundred others died today to satisfy the blood-lust of allah's most ardent followers. And of course, in your world, it's all our fault, I'm sure. Quote
Mark_Husbands Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I just opened this post and cant see anything that anyone else said that warranted THAT response. whats your deal with the Dutch East Indies Company thing, anyway? Quote
Fairweather Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 I just opened this post and cant see anything that anyone else said that warranted THAT response. You have to tie it all together with the whole that is ZZ. He has struck me as an apologist for these guys on at least one other occasion, and I suspect his celebration for this BBC fella's release is only part of why he's happy. whats your deal with the Dutch East Indies Company thing, anyway? Congrats!! After almost 3 years with that avatar, you're the first to accurately note its source. The VOC - Dutch East India Company - was (arguably) the first publicly held corporation, formed in 1602. I guess I thought it would be funny to attach their corporate symbol to my name as a sort of acknowledgment that I am perceived by many here beholden to corporate interests and all the evils therein. But now, thanks to you, the gig is up and I will begin my search for a new avatar soon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_India_Company Quote
AlpineK Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Hmmm, and I always figured it had to do with Mt Fairweather. Quote
ashw_justin Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Did they make sure he was not a bomb first? hope so Quote
Fairweather Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Hmmm, and I always figured it had to do with Mt Fairweather. You're confusing avatar with user name? Quote
AlpineK Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 It's easy to confuse me when I've never done much reading on the East India Company. Quote
Mark_Husbands Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 "Nathaniel's Nutmeg" is a fun, easy-to-read, popular history about 17th century Dutch-English conflict over "Spice Islands" trade. The monopolization of the spice trade by the VOC was a key element in transforming Holland from a former-Hapsburg province to a world power and the richest country of its time. In their approach to business, the VOC definitely played hardball. Quote
crackers Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Congrats!! After almost 3 years with that avatar, you're the first to accurately note its source. ... Uh, you mean that you thought that was a secret? Huh. First joint stock corporation. Publicly held, well... Quote
ZimZam Posted July 5, 2007 Author Posted July 5, 2007 You're the cheesedick celebrating because some muslim terrorist thugs threw you a bone. One they kidnapped, for God's sake! The guy's alive - and that's good - but probably a few hundred others died today to satisfy the blood-lust of allah's most ardent followers. And of course, in your world, it's all our fault, I'm sure. No one threw me anything. A hostage was released and I was happy for him. You called me an apologist because I encourage dialogue with the moderates in Hamas? Isolating them only gives them a platform for legitimizing their grievances, and emboldens their more radical elements. I recognize Israel as a state, and agree with you that citizens have an unalienable right to live without fear of being "hamburger helper." Go ahead ignore them. They'll go away. Kinda like AIDS did. As far as that cheesedick comment, GO FUCK YOURSELF. Quote
