Choada_Boy Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 McLane has it as both 5.10b (route description) and 5.9 (topo). Which is it? Quote
catbirdseat Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Yes, I was curious about the same thing. Seems like it would be a good alternative to Dessert Dyke for getting up to the next level. Quote
David Trippett Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 it's 5.9 ....but could feel harder depending on how you do it.... it's a fun pitch Quote
bstach Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 McLane has it as both 5.10b (route description) and 5.9 (topo). Which is it? Clearly Karen is not a math wiz. Quote
fern Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 "Karen" is Karen Kogler(sp?) who was killed when an ice route collapsed on her in the Rockies. Very sad. Quote
jefffski Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 thank you for that info fern. i remember that incident. i believe she was sitting eating lunch and was away from the climb. as for karen's math, the start may determine how hard the climb is. from the ground--in the gully, i believe the crack may be as hard as 10b. standing on the top of the gully wall makes the first moves easier. the traverse is harder than 5.9, imho. the first time i did it, i walked the hand traverse. almost pooped my pants. much easier and safer as a hand traverse. fun climb. well worth having a few big pieces for the layback.
