wdietsch Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 I am looking to pick up some TCU's and couldn't help but notice how inexpensive these units are. They are UIAA and CE certified and have gotten good reviews in the "rags" but the age old words "you get what you pay for" keep ringing thru my head. Anyone out there have any experience with these units? Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 I have heard from padnas that they suck after a long period of wear and tear. Not sure though. I used some new ones and they were fine though. Quote
wdietsch Posted January 16, 2002 Author Posted January 16, 2002 Thanks Capt. One post closer to 3K, go man go.... Quote
gregm Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 look at their range compared to similar cams; i think the rock empire ranges are somewhat smaller. i have also heard the triggers are sticky or awkward or something. Quote
specialed Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 I've used them quite a bit. We had one on the Zodiak this fall. They don't come close to fitting in as many places as Aliens and they don't have the range that BD micros have. It held up just fine to some serious abuse though. For straight forward free climbing they're probably OK but for aid or if you want a lightweight rack for the mountains I'd say skip em. Quote
willstrickland Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 Hey Wes, here's a link to a decent R&I review on a bunch of cams with links to the companies, etc.cam review Personally, I'd look for something else from a foreign supplier (e.g. BDs from MEC or something). Maybe make a trip to Lilloet and hit MEC. Exchange rate is like $1 US = $0.65 Canyuk. Quote
wdietsch Posted January 16, 2002 Author Posted January 16, 2002 Yo Will, That review along with our conversations about clean aid is exactly what got me thinking about the topic Quote
Zenolith Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 I have a set. Mine don't have milled cam stops which caused a problem once. Maybe the new ones do have the stops -I know the bigger ones now do. Range, as mentioned, is small but for an inexpensive set for taking multiple sizes they are pretty OK. Action is not as smooth as some but is better than similar HBs. The low price is the only thing these have on most other micros so if you can get BDs, Aliens, Metolius, or similar for cheap then skip these. Quote
