archenemy Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Good. That disgusting psuedoscientific bullshit should be discouraged. Unacceptable. Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Interesting stuff. Doubt it will have a large implication for human behavior though, since human relationships are so complex. I wouldn't get too worked up about "ethics" until people start experimenting on humans. We have been manipulating animals by selective breeding for millenia, so this isn't some new-fangled ethical crisis of the century. Quote
archenemy Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Agreed, it is certainly not a new arguement in ethics. But the human behavior I am supportive of is the one that says homosexuality is not a disease to be cured. Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Yeah, and I think "disease" has got to be one of the most overused and misused terms in recent history. So many minority behaviors are labeled as a disease these days. What is the definition of a disease, anyway? On another line of thought, why aren't outspoken homosexuals praising a possible new method for choosing what they want to be? If biology dictates their sexual orientation, like it clearly (usually ) does their gender, why speak out to prevent a new choice from being developed? Transgenders surely grasp the importance of these findings. Quote
G-spotter Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I would rather that they developed a method for making sheep more attracted to climbers. Then I wouldn't have to wear such high boots baa Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Perhaps this team will discover the 'evangelical' gene, as well. Quote

archenemy Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Maybe because the parent is the one who would be making the choice, not the individual? That's like the choice about what gender to give birth to--something is just a little off about it. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Now if only they could discover a way for children to choose their parents... Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 True, they mention a couple of ways to mess around, one by parental choice during pregnancy, but also another which made previously gay rams attracted to females. I was referring to the latter, but the former does indeed pose concern. Quote

That's like the choice about what gender to give birth to--something is just a little off about it. parents already have this choice.... if they find out it's going to be the 'wrong' sex... ABORT! Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I think it's fascinating how many of the same people (surely not everyone though) who speak out against this sort of relatively minor parental determinism are advocates of the ultimate parental choice, whether or not the child will live to see its birthday. archenemy Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I think that a facet of being an intelligent human being is the ability to hold two contradictory ideas or beliefs simultaneously and still functioning just fine. Quote
pink Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 what the fuck are you guy's talking about cloning, homosexuals, same sex, close minded people. all that from a rainbow and a sheep. throw them a cardboard box and they will play for hours. Quote
ericb Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 (edited) AE - so are you saying that holding the position that the influencing of the sexual orientation of a fetus is wrong while at the same time holding that it would be OK to kill that fetus is a sign of intellectual enlightenment? No. But I am saying that folks who feel that abortion is ok while capital punishment is not are ok. I am saying that people who thing abortion is heinous while capital punishment is acceptable are okay. IOW, my statement had nothing to do with my personal beliefs beyond the one that says accepting two apparently conflicting ideals is normal and doesn't need to be defended constantly. Quote
