cj001f Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Why don't you give us more gripping tales of the nodder - people really give a flying fuck You sure do Nodder... are those african swallows flying fucking? Quote
faster_than_you Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Is there any possibility of somebody starting a new coop that would be more like the REI of olden times? Earlier in this thread, somebody noted that they "shut out" MEC. Are they in fact able to prevent a bunch of us from cc.com or anywhere else from banding together and getting some wholesale deals - or is it the gear manufacturers with their "manufacturer suggested retail" pricing that do so - or some combination? it's much easier for the whiners to make grandiose statements, bitch and complain... than it is to actually DO SOMETHING... cj001f Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 it's much easier for the whiners to make grandiose statements, bitch and complain... than it is to actually DO SOMETHING... It's even easier to make pointless complaints about people whining and complaining I tried to do something.. run for BOD. That was pointless. As for a new Coop - you could, but given the ongoing massive consolidation in the outdoor industry it's a very competitive environment - without good financing or a large base you wouldn't go far. Probably better setting yourself up as a "pro" group and negotiating pro deals for all of you Quote
faster_than_you Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I tried to do something.. run for BOD. That was pointless. Oh I see, you're a disgruntled person... You got passed over and are still pouting... I guess the collective wisdom of REI thought you were a nodder too. OMG. Quote

At 1 a minute that's 500hrs in front of a bloody store! Who let you out of the mental cubicle Quote

archenemy Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 And voting for the president is JUST LIKE bitching about your REI income. Pleeeeze. Pay attention darling, pay attention. REI is worse than voting for president - your vote for president actually matters! That's hilarious. Electoral College, honey, that's what matters. Quote

Are they in fact able to prevent a bunch of us from cc.com or anywhere else from banding together and getting some wholesale deals - or is it the gear manufacturers with their "manufacturer suggested retail" pricing that do so - or some combination? The legal mumbojumbo in most distributor agreements - I believe - will stipulate the pricing structure. Break the structure, you lose your distributorship. You may also be allowed to only distribute in a certain region. Bad things happen to distributors that sell outside their area... when the manufacturer finds out. And who would tell the manufacturer? Why REI, of course, who would then lean on the manufacturer to strictly enforce (or even rewrite) the distribution agreement. And what manufacturer/distributor would want to lose REI's business? That's what I refer to as the walmartification of REI. It's the one way relationship between retail outlet and supplier/manufacturer that seems to be creeping into everything retail. Just once I wish manufacturers would band together and tell retailers to go to hell when they push unreasonable cost/distribution issues down their throats. Then perhaps retailers would remember that without suppliers, they're really nothing. [/rant] Quote

I'm sure you could have enlisted help collecting signatures from other disgruntled members. I received the required paperwork and got signatures from myself and a few friends, if that doesn't count Given the timeframe (which was something like 90 days) the task was uphill, and I've better things to do with my life. If that makes me a gadfly feel superior Yes, online would be a good means to organize. I'm not sure whether it's related to recent press coverage, online bitching or noble sentiment but the board is more transparent, they've even a webpage http://www.rei.com/aboutrei/bod.html And nominations are now open it appears http://www.rei.com/aboutrei/boardnominationopen.pdf Quote

REI is worse than voting for president - your vote for president actually matters! I complain about REI because they have consistantly disenfranchised the owners (members) and consolidated control in the board. The only way the owners (members) can get a canidate up for election to the BOD is by a writein campaign featuring 1% of active members (yes I actually received the canidate package). Then you have the possibility of being elected. There can only be 2 writein canidates on the BOD, all other members are nominated by the CEO and BOD. Ergo the owners can effect minimal change over the company they own - the managers control and run the company at their whim. Because the managers have chosen to do some decent things (green power, etc.) doesn't change the cronycapitalism way they now function. Cronyism's ultimately bad for us in both the small and large sense. Sorry if that make me selfrighteous Would I like REI to operate differently? Yes, but I'd like even more to have a say in their operation! If the membership chose the course it'd be different. you said you were born in DC... you should be used to lack of representation Quote
