tanstaafl
Was this accident Saturday or Sunday? A guy fell on R&D Saturday and was evacuated by climbers present, loaded into his own car, and driven away to the medical clinic by his wife, but I never saw or heard any ambulances and I don't think anyone called for one. catbirdseat
I drove by Icicle Buttress late yesterday afternoon. There was rescue rigging running up the hill in the vicinity of R&D Route. I didn't stick around to find out who was hurt.
jano
It was a leader fall (two guys, the leader was from Olympia) from the blocky/crack system to the left (west) of the traditional start of R & D. The leader fell from where it starts to round over and hit the wall once before landing on the slab below. He fell about 60 feet. It was hard to tell if a piece had pulled or if he was running it out (I saw the fall from the road and helped with the rescue), but one piece did hold, which prevented him from falling the rest of the way down the slab. I have heard third hand that he does not have serious spinal or head wounds, but does have some other serious injuries.
wayne
Thanks- glad to hear it was survived w/o too much damage
Blake
Why all the injuries on R&D? seems like moderate climbing with good pro the whole way, right?
mike_m
Probably because it wasn't R&D. It was something (not in the book)left and higher than the easy start to R&D.

mike_m
No, below. Their belayer was on the dirt about 20' above and just a bit left of the R&D start and the route headed pretty much due north. It looked like it would have ended below and left of Cocaine Crack. Kind of a blocky crack/chimney line. Never seen anybody on it before. catbirdseat
Ron Lavigne. That sounds awfully familiar. I believe that I climbed with him once three years ago. Edited April 25, 2006 by catbirdseat

catbirdseat
Ron's a great guy. We did Prusik and High Priest together in 2003. I hope he recovers quickly.
