At the end of the month I will be moving to Vancouver from the US Coast and I would love some general beta for the area. Suggestions on guide books or local climbing shops would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Wander by MEC (that's Mountain Equipment Co-op, on Broadway 3 blocks east of Cambie), don't forget to leave while you still have a dime in your pocket, pick up one of the Squamish guides (Squamish Select is the least overwhelming). That should get you started.

If you're interested in mountaineering and have decent technical skills already, you should definitly grab "Alpine Select" by McLane - very informative guide with inspiring photos. If you like mountains, you're going to love it out here, especially if you arrive before November thumbs_up.gif

I will be out in two weeks, I can't hardly wait! I have been climbing ice for the past 2 years and lead to 3+, I am quite comfortable on steep snow. The splitboard is my perfered mode of backcounty travel, and I am always up for new tours.

Thanks all!

One thought about coming out here for winter sports.

The snow is often heavy and prone to sliding. Take extra care to stay out of avalanches.

MEC is the sh!t! Just watch the driving it's kinda crazy up there. If you see everyone driving in the right lane (on broadway) don't switch unless you have to. No one let's you turn accross traffic so you will be sitting there awhile. Squamish definatley Squamish! Someone correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure the opening sequence of K2 was shot there on the upper grand wall.
