My buddy and I were considering hiking to Muir this weekend and were curious about the conditions and /or any "heads up" advice or info about the route conditions.

Thanks!

Peace Out.

I skinned up the lower snowfield on Tuesday. At that time there was a well-established boot path near Paradise, but the tracks petered out long before the snowfield. The winter route up Pan Point is covered in snow again, though there are rocky areas that pose a threat to skis. Forecast for this weekend looks less than nice, so carry a map and compass and know how to use 'em, or choose a hike on which you'll be able to see where you're going laugh.gif.

Pick up the Park Services handout that clearly shows every compass bearing and elevation level you need. The climbing rangers should have this. Maybe it is available on the web. Pretty much everyone I know has made some kind of navigation error up there in a white out.

I was at Muir yesturday and the day before. About a foot of new snow from 7000 up. Muir is in good shape and a well established trail is beginning to take shape thanks to my group and a few others going up and down. It is nice now. Weather might be turning sour though. Soggyendo (Andy) and I summited Rainier via the Gib ledges on Thursday and Friday (spent the night at Muir on Thurs). It was good.
