There's an interesting piece in the most recent ECONOMIST about how Arabic culture and political expectations are evolving as the state-run, censored media are challenged by the availability of satellite TV, al-Jazeerah and al-Arabiyah. Also about US support for al-Arabiyah and hostility to al-Jazeerah.

 

Yeah - interesting article. They must have reprinted it in "Mother Jones" or "The Utne Reader" for you to have come across it though....

I tried reading

"The Utne Reader" once a few years ago. I read 3 issues before I realized what a rag it is. What got me is when somebody told me Utne rhymes with chutney; that clinched it, for some reason.
