first ascent in UW physics lab

Sometimes teaching physics labs can be tedious, especially if the students are being peculiarly self-sufficient. I used my leisurely time to eye a nice route up the seven-feet-tall cabinets where they meet the wall. I managed to free solo the route. I will call it 'Sky's distraction.' I hope no one asks about those marks on the wall. Any one seen any other worthwhile routes at the UW physics building? I might try climbing the peanut in the courtyard next.

Has anyone ever climbed those free standing tall pinnacles near the library.? I think there are 3 of them and they must be 100 feet tall!!

I believe it has been done. Or this may be a Seattle urban legend. It would require stemming up a four-foot wide (or thereabouts) chimney for that 100 feet. No chance for placing pro, though. Not something I would do, for certain.

There was a story in the University Daily recently about some guy climbing about half way, the cops showed up, and then he was too tired to do anything but stay where he was. He eventually got down, sans topping out.

How would you even get down from those things? Lower over the other side/

Try this: http://www.washington.edu/cambots/cambot3.mpg (this shows the towers in a video). I'm thinking it would be more than a rope-length to rappel off of (60m rope divided by 2 to double for rappel). I'm sure the towers have got gratings on the top with which to set up an anchor.

 

Sky: your story about the guy getting halfway up sounds familiar.

Nice link. So, do you do it with a rope to get down really quickly and hopefully avoid arrest, or do you just walk by it every day with the thought of it eating away at your self-respect?

When I was there in the '80s I did the hutch and suzallo with a friend. And was not arrested so it remains un verified.

Well done. Did you do it late at night, on a holiday, or something like that? I don't think it would help with probation to get caught 'trespassing', so I'll probably just wait awhile...

Alpine Dave has a buildering guide. Says the towers used to be bolted with 1/4 inchers, until the cops chopped the route. Disrespectful assholes!
