HankMcCain Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 Hi all... I'm looking to do a guided climb of Hood this June with some instruction beforehand. This will be my first technical/snow climb. The only guide service I've found so far has been Timberline Mountain Guides. Has anyone ever used them or heard anything about them? Or can you recommend any other services to look into? Thanks... Blake Posted December 31, 2004 Posted December 31, 2004 I bet you could find a partner on this site for a day on hood this spring, and you could buy them lunch and after the climb for a lot cheaper than a guide service. Just know how to self-arrest and walk with crampons on. Quote
Winter Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 Yes, TMG is fine. I've never used them, but I doubt you would go wrong. I've met several of their guides on the mountain, at Smith, etc etc and they all seemed competent, but of course it depends on who you get. Quote
daler Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Hi there, I had the chance to work with three of the Timerline guides in a profesional setting(amga training) and they were great to hang with. Very competant and tons of fun!!!! Dale Quote
iain Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Some of them waste too much time reading this site rather than climbing, but when they are climbing, they are very good at it. Quote
cj001f Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 I´ve not met their guides climbing, but I´ve found them very helpful and professional. FWIW. Quote

EWolfe Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 The owners, Steve and Pete, are friends of mine. They run a solid guiding company, and I have climbed with a few of their guides in the past. All good people and strong climbers. Quote
David_Parker Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Hank, I am sure you could find a partner somewhere other than the guide service, but if you have never climbed on a mountain like hood, invest the $ in Timberline Mt. Guides. They are not huge like RMI. They are a very reputable, smaller company and you will have fun with them too. But most importantly, you will learn a lot of important skills from professionals in 2 days that you can then take on to other mountains if you're hooked. Mt Hood is a great place to start climbing big mountains with glaciers and some altitude. Go with the guide service and it will open more doors than just hooking up with a stranger. Feel free to PM if you want more info. I really like Pete and Steve and I know you will too! Quote
John Frieh Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Getting someone on the page to let you tag along I think would be a more fulfilling and a better learning experience for you. WRT guides/outdoor professionals though there are some guides out there who are competent and qualified that are not either AMGA or IFMGA certified/endorsed you can always rest assured if your guide is AMGA and/or IFMGA certified. HankMcCain Posted January 14, 2005 Author Posted January 14, 2005 Thanks for the advice, everyone. I've been talking to Steve via email and he has been very helpful. We will probably go with them. Quote
