Haydar Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 We were climbing Beacon SE corner on Saturday and saw two guys to our right around the corner a pitch or so higher than us. Assuming you're on this list, what route did you guys climb? Quote
sketchfest Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 Not sure of the climbers, Maybe JosephH, but it was prolly Young Warriors Quote
JosephH Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Haydar, Sketchfest is right, it was Jim Opdyke and myself on Young Warriors. It is a much favored route for many of us that climb at Beacon. I posted a description of it here: Young Warriors (5.9) ***** Quote
lancegranite Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 What about the tales going around about somebody onsight free soloing Young Warriors and getting lost high on the route? Quote
Haydar Posted December 21, 2004 Author Posted December 21, 2004 Thanks, sounds like fun, nice TR and good beta! Quote
iain Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Some guy free-soloed it while we were there a month or so ago (onsight except for some general info from us). He said he did get off route and almost killed himself. He drove in on a motorcycle. I'm sure some here know him. Nice guy. Quote
JosephH Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 That was Jim Opdyke's new roommate and he just had a head of steam up and got a bit ahead of himself after Jim talking so much about what a great route it is. He is new to Beacon and I suspect the experience will temper such scenarios in the future. Beacon has seen a lot of solos over the years, but the bottom line remains that a lot of stuff out there is loose and can/does come off on you. Case in point last Saturday: I've done YW a bunch of times and it is pretty much a romp for me at this point, but right off the p3 belay I laid of what I thought was my usual flake, but it wasn't (confused by the cold) - and this one exploded into a large mass of shards that along with me went raining down on Jim who fortunately was off to the left a bit. Probably because of the cold day, but for whatever reason, I happen to place a Metolius #2 just above the belay which I normally don't do, which turned out to have been a wise move this time. So yes, someone did do it (and he is a nice guy), he didn't really know where he were going, wasn't familiar with the rock, and by their own account they almost died - so take it for what it's worth. Nice guy. watch out for that guy...he is a shady character. used to sport a nice blue mohawk! Quote
lancegranite Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 Was that before or after the full length dreadlocks? Quote
texplorer Posted December 22, 2004 Posted December 22, 2004 . . . and I heard the mystery soloist was from the greatest country (ie state to yall) in the nation (Texas). Having said that I won't be soloing that route anytime soon. Quote
lancegranite Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 I must admit, he is my best climbing partner! If you don't know Risky Runout, he is one cool cat...ladies beware! Quote
Szyjakowski Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 never trust a texan...especially one with dreads or a mohawk. good thing he keeps it short now. Quote
texplorer Posted December 28, 2004 Posted December 28, 2004 never trust a texan...especially one with dreads or a mohawk. good thing he keeps it short now. or anyone whose name ends in "ski" Quote
rbw1966 Posted December 28, 2004 Posted December 28, 2004 Ya know why most polish names end in "ski"? They don't know how to spell toboggan. Quote
JoshK Posted December 28, 2004 Posted December 28, 2004 . . . and I heard the mystery soloist was from the greatest country (ie state to yall) in the nation (Texas). BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH...I think Austin is the only worthwhile thing in that entire state. Quote
