So, out of curiousity, which axe in the pics above has the 4x4, and which has the upgrade? I see that there's a difference in the two.

 

Which seems to climb water ice better? Alpine ice?

Ones the old "upgrade" and ones the new. 4x4's aren't on there. For pure ice the upgrade is better b/c it displaces less ice. The 4x4 is more durable, obviously. It just depends on how much ice to rock will be on the route you want to climb.
