I'll preface this by saying I abstained from presidential voting yesterday, and I think that we have a mess in Iraq. But a lot of people who are outraged about Iraq seem to think that it is unprecedented in this country to have such a large division of opinion when it comes to the subject of war. Bullshit. Americans have always been divided on the subject of war.

For instance, the nostalgic assertion that the nation united into the "greatest generation" in order to win World War II is false. The truth is, 63% of US soldiers were drafted in World War II. There was a tremendous antiwar outcry. For most of this time, the conscription was so unpopular that it was limited to 1 year, and a Hell of a lot of people fought to avoid it. Similarly, 72% of US soldiers in World War I were drafted.

Time to put the outrage about the fact that we are there in Iraq behind us. It is time now to only focus on how best to get out and at the same time leave the region in some semblance of stability.

Good point. Unfortunately, the candidate with an actual plan for doing so has conceded the election to the incumbent.

Will Bush come up with a plan, and what impact will that eventual plan have on our relationship with the Mid-East and the Islamic world?

What plan was that? I don't think I ever heard that one. Oh! It was the one where we magically get the UN to suppor thte war in Iraq. Gotchya. rolleyes.gif

No, it was the one where we rebuilt our relations with the international community and attempted to reconstruct a cooperative approach to international policy. Where we apologize for what should have been our former leader's misguided invasion and hamfisted alienation of our historic allies, and try to move on, be constructive, and work together to right a bad situation.

Or did you not read enough into what was being said? Forest for the trees, etc.

No offense, but if you didn't vote, how can you complain? What were you thinking?

But I agree with you. We can't just leave Iraq. We have to stop bitching about how we got into this deadly debacle and figure out a gradual exit strategy.

What a freakin' mess... and we sure can't count on this administration to lead us out of it.

Face it. There was no way Kerry's plan was going to result in stability after U.S. troops left--and I voted for Kerry. The Bush administration doesn't have a clue. In other words, I believe that Iraq is going to degenerate into a civil war, with the resultant chaos becoming a veritable Petri dish for culturing terrorists. This is what will happen regardless of when our troops leave or how they leave.

If you believe that, then the only rational approach is to reduce the number of dead Americans by getting the fuck out of there right now.

That is merely an euphamism for what I just said.

By the way, now that the election has passed, and Dubya could give a shit about what the American people think about the body bags coming back, how long do you think it will be before there is a major invasion of Fallujah? What's the over/under on the American deaths? 100? 500? 1000? What's the over/under on Iraqi deaths? Ten times the Americans?

If the Rapture happens, will it suck Bush up into Neverland and leave us in peace?

I don't mind being one of those left behind if it means we get rid of the whakos...

I like it! I know I'll be left behind!
