My wife was telling me that legislation was passed which exempts those that make more than 450.00 a week from collecting overtime. Is this true? What a crock. Inflation continues to go up and everyone continues to make less.

Also, if you register to vote in the state of Washington you basically cast a vote for whatever political affiliation you claim in your registration. If you cast a vote for even one person outside of your party your ballot is discarded? Is this a free country anymore? Was it ever?

As long as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer then it's all good. rolleyes.gif

Not a new concept but Bush is a fucking wank and I can't believe that shit actually passed with elections coming up. If Kerry can't turn that into some grade A ammo against W then there is no hope...

This was some legislation that was pushed hard by the Bush Administation. Next on the list will be protecting corporations from lawsuits for unsafe or dangerous products. They will call the legislation "anti-frivolous lawsuit".

This is just in the September primaries to prevent "crossover voting"... where voters sometimes cast a ballot for a weaker candidate from the opposite party in the hopes that their true candidate will have an easier contest in the general election.

This new process was pushed by both parties, and imposed by a federal court. One is still free to vote for the candidate, regardless of party, in the November general election. The only real problem with this new system is that the taxpayers foot the bill, whereas it seems to me that the parties themselves should.

It's the system favored by the parties, but not by the general populace. While some party loyalists like that sabotage tactic you describe FW (the Republican shenannigans to try and get Nader on the ballot come to mind, but I'm sure both sides do it), there are more valid reasons why some of us voters would like to have that choice.

For instance, I live in the 20th legislative district and I'm registered Democrat. This district takes in large swaths of Lewis county as well as some of Thurston county, and historically by default tends to go Republican. Not all Republicans are the same, and since I'm likely to be represented by a Republican no matter what my affiliation, I'd like to be able to choose a moderate over a right wing extreme, and that decision happens in the primary.

The imposition of this system is pretty damn fishy too. The population in general selected, via the initiative process, a "top two" primary, but Gov. Locke acted unilaterally to veto that choice and install the system favored by the two main political parties rather than the people. That's one of the reasons a lefty friend of mine has vowed to vote for an Eastern Wa Republican governor candidate before he'll vote for another "goddamned King county administrator."

Don't think for a minute that a GOP governor would have been under any less pressure to do the exact same thing. It was most convenient for the lame-duck governor to take the hit on that, otherwise you'd have seen an interesting tango between the state house and the governors mansion. Everyone in Olympia wanted to see the decision go down that way, but no one wanted their fingerprints on it.

Mind numbing...I'd have to agree with your friend about the King County thing. A friend of mine over here was telling me about King County legislation that is being voted in which will ALLOW me to build on approx. 10% of my OWN land. 10 PERCENT!

Washington State has to be the most fucked up state I've ever lived in. Best mountains though. Olympia, WA...LEARN TO SWIM.
