600 Pound Woman Dies After Rescue

Friday August 13, 2004 12:04pm

A dramatic rescue ended tragically Wednesday in Stuart, Florida – a rescue so difficult firefighters say they had never seen anything like it. It happened late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning at the home of a 600-pound woman who was having trouble breathing.

Rescuers went in not knowing how difficult it would be to get her out. 40-year-old Gail Grinds was literally stuck to her couch and had to be removed surgically at the hospital. Authorities estimate she had been on the couch anywhere from 2 to 5 years.

Martin County Fire and Rescue crews faced what seemed to be an impossible mission. Everyone going inside had to wear protective gear. The stench was so powerful they had to blast in fresh air. They tried to cut out the front door, but at 4-and-a-half feet wide – it didn't work. They also had to cut plywood since a normal stretcher wouldn't do. An ambulance was too small - so they brought in a trailer to get her out.

While rescue crews came up with a back-door rescue plan, detectives secured what had become a crime scene - questioning family members about how conditions got that bad. Using planks, rescuers loaded the woman on to the trailer, still attached to the couch. Removing her would have been too painful - since her body was grafted to the fabric. After years of staying put - her skin had literally become one with the sofa - needing to be surgically removed.

Detectives are investigating whether it was a case of neglect, or simply a very sad story. Grinds was taken to the Martin Memorial hospital where doctors removed her from the couch, but she died in spite of all the attempts to save her life.

Let the one liners begin...

She gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "I was stuck to the couch"

well if she was really stuck to the couch she won't be able to use the rest room, and shit would literally build up inside her. seeing as how she was 600lbs she must have ate alot, and there is no way she didn't take a shit for 2 + yrs, imagine how constipated she would have been.

Being obese, esp THAT obese dosent usually mean overeating, obviously some health related issues are involved, diabetes...etc. And it does sound like others were involved so I am thinking she must have been getting some form of care, albeit on a very basic level.

Left un attended the body can create alot of nifty odors outside of feces and urine, but those two can contribute significantly to odor creation.

I have a homeless man that hangs out around my Starbucks, he is coherent and carries on semi normal conversation but refuses to use tradition waste disposal methods. He merely shits and pees as he walks down the street or sits in benches. He is an AMAZING odor producer and the back of his pants are black. Supposedly a few years back he was at the shelter just up the street and a gang of other homeless fellows grabbed him, stripped him and tossed him into the the waterway near here. Needless to say after I had to clean out ground in poop from our outside chairs he has been banned from the store.
