foraker Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 I've been thinking about replacing the old cords on my BD hexes with some wires (like the new ones). Of course, immediately I start thinking about things i could screw up e.g. is there a particular wire/swage that should be used?, etc. Anyone ever do this, think about doing this, etc? Does this raise any red flags? (Danger Will Robinson!) Quote
bigwalling Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 Hmm, use varied diameters of glazanized aircraft cable with a plated copper swage. Don't use stainless wire! If you use say 3/32" wire crimp the swage more than once sealing off the edges. Quote
snoboy Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 What is wrong with Stainless, bigwalling? Â If you are going to do this, I would really advise you to learn a lot about swaging... ie, if you have to ask, then maybe it's not for you. Quote
bigwalling Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 When you swage the stainless it will be 20-30% weaker at the swaging connection. Stainless wire is "slippery". 7x19 wire is probably better too. Quote
lummox Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 fuk old hexes. get you some metoluis curved ones. they are way better imo. Quote
thrutch Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I'm with lummox on this, tho I prefer the WC rockcentrics. The wire is a dumb idea, no benefit gained from increased weight. Quote
Loose_Brie Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 Interesting. I cut the wires off mine and replaed them w/ 5.5mm spectra cord. Quote
arlen Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 On a couple occasions I watched the wire lever the hex out of a placement, then the whole contraption slid down and hit me in the balls. So I replaced the wires with spectra and stopped climbing with people who place hexes as the first piece on a pitch. Quote
wormfighter6 Posted June 17, 2004 Posted June 17, 2004 I would say it raises some red flags w/ me. 5.5m spectra w/ a double fisherman (bomber). Wire that your really sure how to attach properly (suspect). I have all spectra on mine and I have fallen on them with no problems. Quote
