I set out to find a good photo of that ugly bastard Mithc Ryder...and instead found this interesting Top 10 songs of 1966 list:

1. I'm A Believer - Monkees

2. Summer In The City - Lovin' Spoonful

3. Wild Thing - Troggs

4. Hanky Panky - Tommy James And The Shondells

5. When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge

6. Soul And Inspiration - The Righteous Brothers

7. Monday, Monday - Mamas And Papas

8. Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys

9. Devil With A Blue Dress On - Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels

10. Good Lovin' - Young Rascals

Funny thing is that I and probably most of you can sing all of those songs, except maybe for the Righteous Bros tune. I wonder how 1996 will look 30 years from now?

I only looked for my favorite lyric of that song. Sure enough, it was wrong.

"C'mon baby let's go downtown" is gotta be one of the best Neil rockers

"Snake eyes, french fries, I got lots of gas..." thumbs_up.gif

Funny thing about "Rockin' in the Free World" is I never really listened to it. I just heard the chorus and thought it was this dumb sellout song. yellaf.gif

Then I saw it in concert and he played it all sad and sorrowful instead of the "radio version", and I finally realized that the "keep on rockin'" was a sarcastic dig at Reagan. Guess I was outa the loop. He probably made lots of money though from people like me that didn't listen closely to the lyrics, but unlike me relished the idea of "bombing the russians in 5 minutes".

The Troggs rock, E-Rock. rockband.gif

I remember Wild Thing when it came out on the radio. I was 6, and my older bro had the transistor cranked as he did some repair work on our dock. Between that weird song and the summer heat, I had this mental picture of the Troggs being Mexican guys singing with sombreros on. Maybe they were... cantfocus.gif

Then there was that great Sam Kineson cover. thumbs_up.gif

He came dancing across the water

With his galleons and guns

Looking for the new world

In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay montezuma

With his coca leaves and pearls

In his halls he often wondered

With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered ’round him

Like the leaves around a tree

In their clothes of many colors

For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful

And the men stood straight and strong

They offered life in sacrifice

So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend

And war was never known

The people worked together

And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands

And they died along the way

But they built up with their bare hands

What we still can’t do today.

And I know she’s living there

And she loves me to this day

I still can’t remember when

Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water

Cortez, cortez

What a killer.

Sure enough they'll be selling stuff

when the moon begins to rise

Pretty bad when you're dealing with the man

and the light shines in your eyes

This just in, chuck: Like A Hurricane is Neil Young's best.

Actually, C'mon Baby Let's Go Downtown, and Cortez the Killer are pretty good/more obscure ones. (oops, you guys already said this) My alltime fave of his non-hits was that one that began "Look out Mama there's a white boat comin' up the river/there's a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail/I guess you better call John 'cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail..."

I dunno. It's hard to pick a Neil Young fave, actually.

Danger bird, he flies alone

And he rides the wind

back to his home

Although his wings

have turned to stone

And we used

to be so calm

Now I think

about you

all day long

'Cause you've been

with another man

Here you are

and here I am.

That's the moment

that he cracked

long ago in the

museum with his

friends.

The jailbird takes the raps

And he finds himself

spread-eagled on the tracks

But the training that he learned

will get him nowhere fast.

And I know we

should be free

But freedom's just

a prison to me

'Cause I lied

to keep it kind

When I left you

far behind.

With the rain

pounding on his

back he recalls

the moment that

he cracked long

ago in the museum

with his friends.

And like those

memories the rain

keeps pounding

down, down, down.

And though these wings

have turned to stone

I can fly fly fly away.

Watch me fly above the city

Like a shadow on the sky.

Fly, fly, fly.

fuck, I dunno, Dru, I'm still hung-over from New Orleans, trying to work, act like I'm paying attention to a yahoo in my office, and post too! cantfocus.gif

Powderfinger. Yeah that's a great one.

Sedan Delivery is awesome too.

Last night I was cool at the pool hall

Held the table for eleven games

Nothing was easier than the first seven

I beat a woman with varicose veins.

She stopped to see herself in the mirror

Fix her hair and hide heir veins

And she lost the game.

Like a Hurricane I could do without, but seems like a lotta people like it. Better than Devil with a Blue Dress though grin.gif

Yeah, but was the song about a Hurricane?

(By the way, it makes you wonder if they are wearing insulating shoes or something, doesn't it? All that power, and they're jumping up and down in piles of cords and stuff, in the rain...)

Derivative, but rocking: Outshined, and several other cuts from Badmotorfinger. Soundgarten didn't do a damned thing that Led Zeppelin didn't do twenty years earlier, but who's complaining? I've got an audioslave CD, but who else is doing the heavy metal thing with that kind of vigor right now?

(By the way, don't miss the Melvins next week if you want to bang your head!)
