mattrock Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 (edited) Hey anyone, everyone.. Would appreciate some good feedback on a climbing site. http://GetBeta.com - Need to know your gut reaction when you go there, explain why its good or bad and what if anything would get you to contribute to the guide or gallery. Greatly appreciate any and all feedback (positive or negative). Thanks in advance Edited December 18, 2003 by mattrock Quote
scott_harpell Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 well it doesn't work, so mabe that is a problem. Quote
scott_harpell Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 thought it was a cool idea. how long has it been up? might wanna mess around with the fonts a bit. watch out though as soon dru will be there filling up your database! Quote
sk Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 every time I clikc on something it stalls out my computer... whats up wit dat??? P.S. great idea if I can get it to work Quote
EddieE Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 That's a great start. How good it becomes will depend on the quality of the content and contributions. That's why this site stinks like a pair sweaty climbing shoes. Quote
sexual_chocolate Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 gotta register to use? sucky. i personally can't stand it when i gotta scroll to get all the info, especially on the home page, which was the case here. main thing was having to register to even do a search. not worth my time, when i can go to drtopo or some other site, and there's the info, ready to go. mattrock Posted December 18, 2003 Author Posted December 18, 2003 (edited) The site has been up for just over a month Nov 1 was the launch date. FYI- you dont need to register to do a search or browse the site. Only to contribute to the guide, forum, and gallery. Pretty standard I think. Edited December 18, 2003 by mattrock Quote
mattrock Posted December 18, 2003 Author Posted December 18, 2003 so too much info on the front page ya or no Quote
sexual_chocolate Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 i wasn't able to do a search.?.? personal ineptitude? it kept saying "invalid search" something.... but yeah with the scrolling thing, it can be annoying to have to scroll sideways to get all the info, although my 14" laptop might be to blame? but seems like a cool idea. good luck. griz Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 (edited) yeah, left/right scrolling blows. The fixed area on the left on the homepage takes up too much space. Lose the frame idea as it takes up more valuable screen space for information/pics. I'd make it all part of one page. Your orange box for typing in a search is kind of vague/ugly... i thought it was decoration not a place to type. Nice idea, I'll check it out more later. Edited December 18, 2003 by griz Quote
griz Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 Also, why do have a "mini browser" or whatever in the upper right frame? Refresh, print, back are all on your standard browser like IE. Seems wasteful. If you stuck w/ the frame idea(a bad one but) you could fit your search feature up there. Quote
mattrock Posted December 18, 2003 Author Posted December 18, 2003 To search ya gotta type something in the box. before you click search. If it stills says enter search in the orange box that error will show up. I want it to be as intuitive as possible so well work on this. Thanks Quote
mattrock Posted December 18, 2003 Author Posted December 18, 2003 Zactly our thoughts. Need good people to make it good just like anything else. Quote
mattrock Posted December 18, 2003 Author Posted December 18, 2003 The site is built in a frameset so you dont have to reload the naivagtion everytime. These icons hep you navigate the main content frame. We think that using a frameset is more useful because if you print off some beta from our site youll see that it fits on your page without any navigation elements or advertising. Quote
slothrop Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 I agree that the browser bar thingy in the upper right corner is needless duplication. If the only purpose of the frameset is to make it easier to print something without the nav elements or ads, then why not replace the frameset idea with a print button that loads a printer-friendly version of a page, without the extra stuff? The days are past when repeatedly loading navigation elements should slow down your server or your clients. If you're really worried about it, just change as much of the navigation stuff you can into images so that clients can cache them. You have some broken <A> tags that change under a mouseover even though they're not links. For example, all the checkbox labels in the Search box flash orange even though they don't link to anywhere. The fonts are unreadably small in my browser. Oh, and clicking Greenland took me to the Canada section of the guide. Overall, the site's a good idea. Nice work. Quote
