EWolfe Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 I know some of it works: acupunture, massage, and the like. Hell, I even think Feng Shui has a place, but some of that stuff I really have to wonder about: aromatherapy magnetic healing Energy work Gemstone therapy? color therapy Quote
chirp Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 Energy work and aromatherapy or anything that stems from TCM (traditional chinese medicine) and has to do with the "energy body" is actually very valid. They kinda go hand in hand with acupuncture in that they affect the chi pathways ( meridians) in different ways. Pretty amazing stuff and if western medicine ever gets its head out of its ass, maybe well all be a little healthier and more balanced. FYI a killer, albeit deep book on the various energy modalities can be found here. --->Vibrational medicine Quote
sk Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 heres the reals... if it works for YOU, it works. If not try something else. There is a certin amount of placibo effect in ALL medicine. IMHO Quote

Until we develop the "New Physics" required to understand them, they will make sense only to the initiate who "believes" in them. It's all a bunch of bullshit. It's dogma parading as science. Take the sugar pill instead. Quote
lI1|1! Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 many "herbal" medicines, such as St John's wort, ma huang, echinacea, guarana, ginkgo, ginseng, valerian, tea tree oil, goldenseal, arnica, yohimbe and kava kava are far from harmless and can be easily overdosed. this is becoming an increasingly common problem as people fail to recognize their dangers as well as their potential for interaction with each other and western drugs. most of these herbals are either stimulants, blood thinners, or diuretics; or a combination thereof. basically the same things as caffein, asperin/ibuprofin, or prescription diuretics. the danger is enhanced with herbals because the dosage is poorly documented/controlled. internal bleeding and liver damage is a common side effect seen in blood thinner overdose (like taking 12 asperin at once basically). google it. magnets, aromas, accupuncture, etc are all basically nonsense aside from the power of suggestion. dryad Posted October 10, 2003 Posted October 10, 2003 Ditto what lI1|1! said about herbal medicines. Dosage of the active ingredient is highly variable and often unknown. Many modern pharmaceuticals were originally isolated from natural sources. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's safe. I've never heard of "color therapy", but it is well known that different colors have different effects on your mood. Never underestimate the mind-body connection. Quote
