Stephen_Ramsey Posted May 27, 2003 Author Posted May 27, 2003 (edited) From the basin at 5400', I saw a colossal avalanche sweep down the Ice Cliff Glacier on Saturday at 7:45 PM or so. The avy started above the upper rock band and went on for at least 15 seconds. It filled the cirque below the glacier with debris. I'm told there was another huge avalanche on that route, on Sunday around 4 PM, but did not see that one because I was hiking out. Edited May 27, 2003 by Stephen_Ramsey Quote
mattp Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 I tell you, that place is death death death. Don't listen to Alex. Go anywhere near there and you will surely bite it. Quote
JoshK Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 yikes, scary. it was an active weekend avy-wise. Had to be moving with your eyes and ears open extra wide. Quote
micajones Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 I saw the debris from that slide on Sat when I was up there Sunday. I had a nice little picnic at the lake instead. Anyone up there this w/e has a bigger sac than I. Quote
fleblebleb Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 Anybody want to open a betting pool on Perkins' next climb? Quote
Stephen_Ramsey Posted May 27, 2003 Author Posted May 27, 2003 (edited) Forgot to add that there was some action on the Sherpa Glacier Couloir as well. Saw one cornice drop off the wall on the climber's left, and sweep down the couloir while we were on route, but we had already passed above the point of impact. Provided some motivation to hurry up and finish climbing. Edited May 27, 2003 by Stephen_Ramsey Quote
Crackman Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 My friend Jarred and I hiked in early Friday am to climb the IC Glacier and/or Stuart Glacier Couloir, but bailed due to the warm temps. I was bummed at the time but now glad we did! Quote
