  1. Hey Fejas you big Lummox, why don't you come to our "kill bambi" party, You can teach Fern and me and Minx how to butcher the deer and then take your share. The animal won't be wasted. And who knows, maybe Fern would eat the meat if she actually was involved in the killing and butchering. I'll let her speak for herself.
  2. I'm an "opportunivore". I eat meat when I have the opportunity, but don't readily seek it out!
  3. Ok Fern and Minx....hmmm those names just struck me as ironic, Fern (plant) is mostly vegetarian, Minx is an animal, she eats meat.....anyway, I too am interested in learning to skin Bambi from a curiosity/intellectual point of view. Maybe I should have a "kill bambi party". I guess it stems from my opinion that it's not inconceivable we might really need those survival skills in our lifetime! Too many people hate the US and I'll disappear into the woods if they use some smart bomb on us.
  4. One of the best meals I had was Roadkill Fondue at a party in Utah. Apparantly the hosts had hit a deer the day before, killing it. The threw it in the back of their truck and it was really tastey on little forks dipped in boiling oil with lots of different sauces around. Another time I was sea kayaking in Maine and I forgot to bring a water bottle. I came up to a lobster boat where I noticed they were doing some diving too. I asked if they had anything to drink. They gave me a pepsi and offered me some raw (sushi) scallop. That was really good, so they offered me some raw sea urchin. That was sweet. Then they offered me some lobster. I said I don't know about raw lobster dudes....I know all about lobster and I've never heard of eating it raw! Then they told me the lobster was boiling on the stove in the galley so I had some of that too! I have never killed something and eaten it, but I really would like to pop off one of the hundreds of deer that visit my property with a bow and arrow. That would be cool. I could practice a 10 yard shot and then stand in the doorway of my barn just about any day of the year and eventually one would walk by. They come in for apples from my numerous apple trees. I heard you have to expect to track it awhile though and they can go quite a way after being shot. That wouldn't be so good in a residential neighborhood. Oh, there goes Bambi with an arrow in him, and there goes Dave chasing it. I guess night would be best, follow the blood trail with a flashlite. I don't know how to skin the sucker though.
  5. To learn parallel parking, I set up lawn chairs in my driveway. I practiced and practiced until I had it down. On my driving test on a quiet urban street, the instructor found a nice spot between two parked cars and told me to parallel park between them. But they were on the wrong side of the road! But not really because I had practiced parking with the chairs on MY side of the car, not the passenger side! DUH! I panicked and cut too hard and my rt front bumper struck the left rear of the front car ever so lightly. There was no damage to either car. The instructor stopped the test right then and there, filled out a form to leave on the struck car saying it been struck during a drivers test and then we went directly back to the exam building. I passed the second try.
  6. I'm at work and the # is in my guide book, but they have info on avy conditions for climbs such as PC and Borgeau L&R. They actually "control" those climbs, but you still need to use your own common sense. There is so fucking much to do, you can find something on any day. Be flexible and smart.
  7. Was it just the store's inventory or are you sure Garmont itself doesn't make a small enough boot. I can find out if you tell me your size. I'm in with the reps. PM me if you need help. Good boots I think.
  8. Without specifics, I have heard using your own oven is very risky. I'm sure the store where you bought the boots will re-heat them for you. I just got new hockey skates and even they are thermofit!
  9. You obvoiusly don't know HOW to drink in Utah! We have 7% beer, they have 7% powder. I'll take the powder anyday!
  10. Best common sense compromise I've heard. This is what I've been promoting all along. Duh!!! National Parks are public land set aside for permanant protection from other activities such as mining, logging and other natural resource extraction. I don't mind paying for use of that "protected" land. I'll be damned if I'll subsidize the National Forest and soon to come I'm sure, BLM land. I can stand that...
  11. "Was it over when the German's bombed Pearl Harbor?" "German's?" "Forget it, he's on a roll!"
  12. Since I just moved into the plastic boot world, I went through my own binding woes. Since I never experienced tip dive or "rocker launch" with leather boots, cables never bothered me. Billy goat makes a good point about freeing the heel more in light powder. My only counter to that stems from personal experience. I fell in a tree well once and it was scary. What I discovered was that I couldn't get to my toes to undo the bail and even if I could have undone the bail with a pole, the pins still hold my boots. To it wasn't exactly easy to get one of my skis off to extract myself. I imaging being swept up in an avalanche and being partially buried could pose the same problem. I determined escaping my skis would be easier with just cables and no pins, so I don't like pins anymore. The G-3 has been a great binding for me so far. I use the middle weight cables. Shall we discuss the pros and cons of risers now???
  13. No doubt my wedding day and marriage was a total sandbag!
  14. You GO Girl!
  15. Toast, there are some musts for 1st timers to the area. Depending on which way you approach. From the west you can stop in kicking horse canyon and do something close to the road and then keep going and not lose a day of just driving. Ditto if you come from the south (Gibralter wall). Or hit one on the way in and one on the way out. If you begin from the west, stop in Field and do Guiness Gully if safe. Go all the way to very top for a fun day. Maybe do a harder pillar for 2 days in field. Stop in Lake Louise and stay at hostle. From there you can do Louise Falls (harder than it looks) and socialize with fur laden babes. Or you could make a day trip to Murchison Falls for an "alpine" ice climb (bring snowshoes). I think you must drive the icefields parkway and get on the weeping wall and look at Polar Circus to get pumped for future trips. For 2 days up there, stay a night at Rampart Creek hostle. Then if you want to venture down to Banff/Canmore (Canmore hotel or Alpine club) you got a fun day in Johnston Canyon (really steep top-roping and beautiful to boot). Gotto canyon is an easy "rest" day. Professors is a classic, fun climb with walk off descent and good views to the trophy wall. I recommend Prof. way over Cascade (dangerous). All this will keep you busy for a week, present challenging, fun climbing and help you get a feel for how the whole area lays out. You'll be BAAAAAACK!! Arnold Why is this thread so wide?
  16. So what I want to know is where do all these films go after the BMFF road show? Do they disappear into some vault? Seems if you don't want to suffer through the bad to see the good or can't make it to your city's screening, you should be able to find them somewhere else. Why would anyone make a film for such a limited audience?
  17. I did the west ridge of Constance this year. Fortunately we left the guide book description at home and we had an excellent, straight forward adventure. Upon return I read the description and I did not think it even came close to being a good description. I think it was more confusing than helpful. I'd be willing to add my $.02 if you want. It's probably popular enough that you already have it figured out. Along those lines, I also find the descriptions to the finger traverse and the routes on Mt. Washington confusing. Maybe I'm just a gumby. BTW, if you are seeking photos, I have some.
  18. So when does the tour hit Seattle? Usually in December sometime.
  19. The older BD slider leash sucked ass. You know, the one with the little aluminum tube that (didn't) slide up and down to make the wrist loop tight. I just cut apart the leash where it doubled up, removed the slidey thing, sewed on a pull loop and then double backed the bottom/end of the leash around the main leash and sewed it back tight onto the wrist loop. Voila, instant lock down leash. Works great. BTW, I went to my local shoe repair guy with the beefy sewing machine and it cost me 10 bucks. Photos available upon request.
  20. I-rock WAS very dry, but probably plastered with snow now. Doubt there is much ice. Good luck getting onto NF now. You missed it. A day late and a dollar short! Wouldn't hold out much hope for Yocum now either. Was this a troll? I think I bit!
  21. Along these lines, I nominate the Pope. A paradigm shift within the Catholic church towards birthcontrol would be simply........HUGE! The first nation in the world to attain zero population growth was Italy. Furthermore, catholic population is quite low compared to other world religions. Hmm, Erock, I don't know where you get your stats, but I wasn't aware of any country with zero growth over a time period in excess of a year. While Italy is certainly mostly Catholic, the Catholic religion extends far beyond Italy. Italy is also western Europe where to the chagrin of the Pope, they are willing to use birth contol anyway. Still, the majority of Catholics as a whole do not use birthcontrol. You must look south to Mexico, Central and South America for the evidence. I'm not picking on Catholics exlusively. In the US, i think the Mormons are worse than the Catholics as far as procreation goes. Still if you could choose one person who has extensive control over an issue, the pope is pretty darn powerful. I'm not aware of other religions that have one single person who could affect so many people.
  22. Gotta admit, you win. But wait, what if the earth was flying aimlessly through space. Maybe there wouldn't be life, but what does the planet care?
  23. Along these lines, I nominate the Pope. A paradigm shift within the Catholic church towards birthcontrol would be simply........HUGE!
  24. I don't think the focus is necessarily a desire to be normal, but a desire to not be considered "abnormal" for wanting to do something that IS normal.
