  1. I had a hair cutting accident and now I am bald. I thought being bald would at least make me tough but it doesn't. I also thought with all the rocks that have fallen on my head it would look like a potato but it looks more like an eggplant.

  2. Well, I was younger, healthier, and fitter back then =). We soloed or simuled most of the ridge. I remember the upper ridge being longer than 2-3 pitches as well. Hmmmm.

Your assessment of this route being a grand alpine tour is spot on! The climbing is never hard, yet demands the full alpine climber's repetoire and traverses a spectacular landscape.

  3. Buy an ice axe and crampons and figger out how to use them. FOTH has directions. Then climb these:

    Dragontail via Asgard Pass

    Colchuck via Colchuck Glacier

    Mt Stuart via Cascadian Couloir

    Sahale via Sahale Arm

    Mt Ruth via Ruth Glacier

Seattle has several good outdoor stores in the 'Outdoor Store District': REI, Feathered Friends, and Outdoor and More.

  4. So that raises a question, rescue via helicopter is FREE? Out of about 10 people helping this guy that day, nobody knew exactly what the financial remification would be of a rescue/ride out. Especially for a Canadian without US insurance.

My understanding from being involved in two helocopter rescues, is that if the aircraft is US military, they do not charge, even foreigners. A number of years ago my partner and I hauled a Canadian mother/daughter out of a moat on Mt Baker. A US Navy helo winched them out. They said the received no bill for the military flight.

  5. I once had an accident on the Girth Pillar. I broke both my arms (one was an open fracture, the other broken in seven places), had a head injury and broken ankle). My ONE partner, Nick, got me down 1,500 feet of technical terrain, took my pack and hiked me out to the trail head and then, after a 20 hour day, drove me all the way back to Seattle.

Now, if ONE guy can do that, why can't THREE pack the other guy down to the hut I wonder?

  6. I'm curious, what do you have against the idea of access to health care for all Americans?

I happen to be a sick guy fortunate enough to have excellent health care coverage. Even with really good coverage, I have spent > $10,000 out of my own pocket for health care over the last 6 months. Once again I am fortunate in that I can afford it.

What are ill people in this country without good insurance and high paying jobs supposed to do? Please tell me.

  7. I'm sick. Sometimes really sick. I spent 3 months last summer in the hospital. I am on a large regemin of drugs to keep me upright, one of which as a side effect causes weakening of the tendons. Because of this I am not able to run.

So instead of running I have been walking and biking for exercise. On my walks I now have time to say hello to everyone I meet and sometimes learn their stories. I make it a point to greet everyone I meet with a hearty "howdy" or "good morning". I like to mix it up.

Not everyone appreciates being greeted while hiking, but I think doing so makes me a happier person. In fact, I now fancy myself an ambassador of sorts. If you run into a middle aged guy who seems oddly friendly, say hi back. It makes me happy.
