  1. Up with rope, down with dope? A person drinking is more dangerous than someone high off their ass and it doesn't matter if their belaying you or driving in the opposite direction on the freeway. Could someone summarize or perhaps paraphrase the final conclusions of this ever so epic thread?
  2. Wow. You got way better pics than I did! My buddy and I splitboarded up to Muir and crashed in the last two spots in the hut. Did you get a spot in there or did you sleep outside? That was a busy night. It was my first time up Rainier as well. nice job! That snow was so hard and crusty and bumpy, I couldn't tell where the snow ended and the parking lot began. I admit though, it is nice to be able to ride to the parking lot from Muir. For anyone climbing Rainier right now, remember this. -Ingraham Direct is 3-inch styrofoam. -Gib Ledges can be passed easily without a second tool. Well until it melts and freezes again. um. OMG the weather was soooooo sweeeet last weekend! wOOOOOOoo
  3. carnage on SR-542! and Baker thinks they're going to be open tomorrow? it looks like a port-a-potty factory on the hillside above just spontaneously blew up.
  4. Literally, there is no way out of Western WA right now. Well, unless you want to go get rained on more in BC.. Today would be an ideal day for a few laps at vertical world. Excelsior mountain has snapped twice in the last 48 hours, blocking hwy-542 to Baker. There's another slide up by Galena creek. Anyone see how big that deposition was when it slid a couple years back? The scummit is closed. An avalanche at Hyak took out some lift towers and a structure here or there. 4ft deep, 200ft wide. PICS! http://www.nwac.us/photos/current/ hwy-20 is blocked in Concrete due to a mudslide. We're not able to go south through Lewis County on I-5 due to water on the roadway. When are they going to build a bridge over those hobbits down there? Stevens is closed simply due to the threat of avalanches. This is reason enough to add another step to my pre-alpine assault checklist. Go check twitter. =) Closures by county http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/Update/countynavigation.htm a WSDOT badass on twitter http://twitter.com/Terpening NWAC avy report http://www.nwac.us/products/SABSEA
  5. You're right. That's also sorta what caused the valentine's day avalanche we had at Baker back in the big snow year. I was there when this happened and it was actually a perfect example of what you just mentioned above. 14-day storm cycle, and then a short warming trend above and around freezing. I dug a pit that day right by chair 8 and we couldn't see a damn thing - because people don't dig 15-foot deep pits. It's key to observe weather/conditions over time. I can't explain this one enough. It was an effin' monster of a slide. http://www.nwac.us/documents/accidents/1998-1999/mbk_accident_report21499.htm nwac.us is your buddy, for sure. I've got that bookmaked everywhere. Use NWAC's forecasting plus observations from people that have been where you plan to go. Cross-reference everything. The guideline is that you should pay close attention to the changes in weather patterns and their durations. For example, note when temps pop up above freezing and back down again. Just monitoring melt-freeze cycles will give you an idea of what's getting buried and where it lies in the snowpack. There - that's one of the 998,238,392,297 ways you can figure out avalanche danger. Also, you're going to need to make your own observations when out and about. Direct observation is usually a large part of forecasting for the slopes you are about to be on. Like he said, take an avy course because it's so much more than can be conveyed here.
  6. Quite nice. Indeed I am jealous. I was one of those real lucky folks that got the shaft at SeaTac on the 21st during that last snow storm. All I wanted to do once I got home was to rally down to The great South Face of Queen Anne for a rowdy snowboard descent. This is reminiscent of old days in Bellingham on Alabama hill. Someone caught us on tape. so you just went to the bottom without incident? It would have been more interesting if you had gone down into the guard rail, threatening all of I-5 as you loomed above. wait a sec..
  7. Does anyone have an example sandbox version to look at for a proof of concept? It would probably be best to have tons of route metadata that could be filled in, but the only stuff that shows is what you'd see in CAG, for instance. If you wanted a GPS track, that's some collapsed section at the bottom. Most wiki engines can do this already. You would think that something like wikipedia would end up being too much information and perhaps bad info, but the oversight by the rest of the users should balance it out. It usually ends up being the most accurate collective view on the subjects in the wiki. You can already link out into maps in live and google based on lat/lon GPS coordinates. Photo sites like flickr and panoramio already have geotagging built in. This should just be a list of links below the article on the climb. Would you make this only available on cc.com or as a public site for the rest of world?
  8. they won't let me check that on the plane. However, if you're going to redrox, kegs are easy to come by. smiff is also good for that. I can't imagine how many people are going to be at smith.. I WISH I could make it out of town!
  9. rabid badgers can't make sweet love with anyone in your party if you just make sure to hang yourselves (and all your gear) from trees while sleeping. That usually works for me. I bring skychairs and hammocks on alpine hikes.
  10. HAM is pretty amazing though. At least if they guy you reach in Skokie Illinois doesn't feel like calling search-n-rescue, you can have someone to talk to while you freeze your ass off and hurt. morse code! heck yeah. You know, that might come in handy some other times. Like - when you have something reflective or shining that you can signal with. northvanclimber....hmm that sounds familiar. Were you the guy that bailed off the WR of stuart that one day after the lightning started the forest fire on jack ridge? just wonderin..
  11. I experienced exactly what matt described above. I'm totally going back! Good to hear they enjoyed the wonderful hike out. That part is even more interesting.
  12. There! We've done it! Now we know that we all know nothing, and that all we have is hope. Furthermore, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. No more cliches, I promise.. Obama/Biden '08!
  13. The reason the question isn't answered yet is precisely the same reason there are multiple hypotheses. Therefore, you will both go back and forth in circles, failing to convince the other of your particular hypothesis.

    LIBERALS

I'm going to take the simple approach here. Can anyone define what "liberal" means? I'd say that's a prerequisite for subsequent spray on the subject.
  15. Can't we all just sling trees and get along? sheesh
  16. Yeah, but the softer, gentler Indian Creek version gets its name hacked short by just about everybody. There's something to be said about a .12 in leavenworth that requires two number fours. That's quite a feat. I'm assuming what he meant by "more traffic" was that everyone else would show up and scrape the dumb lichen off of it. Then again, it wouldn't be 'natural'. I suppose the next step would be to give it a nifty sign at the base? hey...everybody's doing it.
  17. Actually Eric, research suggests that running enhances the knees' ability to adapt to higher impact motion. Like most other things, if you practice it, your body will start to change in order to mitigate any potential injury. I'm not an expert to the point where I could drill that point way down, but I've studied this for years being involved in competitive running. The reason we hear about people having 'wrecked knees' is typically not a result of running itself, which is a natural musculoskeletal movement. Instead, you mostly hear of destroyed knees from that one guy who used to be a rad skier. Or perhaps you heard about it from that woman that was a professional twister player? Almost all the people we hear about with whack knees are suffering from an ailment they got elsewhere. The last few actually did hurt their knees running, and that was likely due to bad form, lack of stretching, or overexertion. oh and - tittle spaeling fayl.
