  1. However, what you said about americans having a different attitude towards the mountains than Europeans is SOOO true. Over here, I think there is a huge lack of respect for the mountains and their inherent danger.

With 7 dead in Austria alone from avalanches since Thursday I think the bigger difference is the attitude towards death.

Quite honestly the powder shitshow at the bigger resorts doesn't come close to America - imagine 100s of people skiing uncontrolled terrain, dropping in above you, cutting cornices, you name it.

  2. On the other hand, I think it would be great if our local broadcasted weather reports gave a little more information about avalanche dangers when they exist. Not just saying there are high avalanche conditions today, but why and where, i.e., elevations and aspects for the mountain savvy. When the warnings come across the weather radio they take all of about 60 seconds. Coastal communities get wave reports for their surfers, same thing here. Makes sense to me that we all could benefit from that one. What’s the down side?

Why do you think they watch the news?

  3. NC Basecamp is advertising "Eco Friendly Lodging" (on the left margin of this web page as I type).

I am wondering what they have in place there that makes their lodging Eco Friendly? And I am also wondering how that is defined, in context of that ad?

Thanks in advance for any info available.

They've got ten yuppie filled hummers and a couple ballard condos buried in the yard

oh, and the only serve "Free Range" Soylent Green

  4. I'm only suggesting that we keep a running tally so that we can know in a moment how many people have died in avalanches this season.

Why? If you can't pay attention and add for yourself you've no fucking business in avy terrain in winter.

Sorry America - you just can't dumb it down enough.

  5. Perhaps we can add an avi deaths counter at the bottom of this page.

why? from all I've gather none of the people caught yet participated in online circle jerks. Asking people here what should be done about reaching people in the following communities (hikers/snowshoers, snowmobilers, bc snowboarders) is like the priest asking the choir how to convert people - you are talking to the wrong people

  6. http://www.terragalleria.com/mountain/info/chamonix/chamonix-info.html

information is slightly old (i.e. the Belvedere is now closed).

Shouldn't be a problem finding English speakers. Would be harder to find french speakers.

    buy guidebooks in Chamonix

no free camping. Compared to other places in the alps fewer budget options. Look on other message boards (or on the message board at internet cafe in the main square) for a room let - have seen them for 300-400 euro a month.

Geneva + 20 euro transfer bus.

Free wifi at McDonalds. Fat drunk brits have invaded and driven up prices.

  7. Long term a FF lens is probably a better investment

I've ended up preferring wider 12-24f4 or longer 80-200f2.8 for skiing over the 17-50 on a 1.5x crop camera (I have a D70). I do like the 17-50 range for walking around travel photography. Part of the reason I sold the 18-70 was I had lots of problems with dust getting sucked inside the lens travelling in the 3rd world.

  8. I sold the Nikon 18-70f3.5-f4.6 and bought the Tamron 17-50. Optically the Tamron is better (but neither are bad), and build quality is better and it just feels more "solid". The constant aperture is nice as well. If you'd like to borrow it send me a pm. I wouldn't spend the money for the 17-55f2.8DX unless one is making a living.

I'm tempted to sell the 17-50f2.8 and buy the Nikon 18-200 for skiing/travelling lens. Dragging along the 12-24, 18-70 and 80-200 was a pain.

  9. I'm just curious as to what qualities, values, or circumstances you think enabled you to go from ditch-digger to your present station. Do you think that your trajectory constitutes an exception to the rules in a way that renders it meaningless for anyone else to base any broad conclusions on, or that others might be capable of doing something similar?

Please explain the role of random chance in wealth generation. Many wealthy, including Bill Gates, acknowledge it's role in their wealth. Nobody is saying Bill G was lazy.... just that Bill G didn't necessarily work 40,000 times harder than the millionaire. Or for that matter 40,000 time smarter than the millionaire.
