With 7 dead in Austria alone from avalanches since Thursday I think the bigger difference is the attitude towards death. Quite honestly the powder shitshow at the bigger resorts doesn't come close to America - imagine 100s of people skiing uncontrolled terrain, dropping in above you, cutting cornices, you name it.

affordable transport - rental car. quite cheap at LAX (buy chains on the way if you need them) affordable lodging - camping or a motel in Bishop (many to choose ~30-45 minute drive with car from Bishop) If I were down there I'd offer to drive them.

Would be harder to find french speakers. buy guidebooks in Chamonix no free camping. Compared to other places in the alps fewer budget options. Look on other message boards (or on the message board at internet cafe in the main square) for a room let - have seen them for 300-400 euro a month. Geneva + 20 euro transfer bus. Free wifi at McDonalds. Fat drunk brits have invaded and driven up prices.

Long term a FF lens is probably a better investment I've ended up preferring wider 12-24f4 or longer 80-200f2.8 for skiing over the 17-50 on a 1.5x crop camera (I have a D70). I do like the 17-50 range for walking around travel photography. Part of the reason I sold the 18-70 was I had lots of problems with dust getting sucked inside the lens travelling in the 3rd world.

I sold the Nikon 18-70f3.5-f4.6 and bought the Tamron 17-50. Optically the Tamron is better (but neither are bad), and build quality is better and it just feels more "solid". The constant aperture is nice as well. If you'd like to borrow it send me a pm. I wouldn't spend the money for the 17-55f2.8DX unless one is making a living. I'm tempted to sell the 17-50f2.8 and buy the Nikon 18-200 for skiing/travelling lens. Dragging along the 12-24, 18-70 and 80-200 was a pain.

Please explain the role of random chance in wealth generation. Many wealthy, including Bill Gates, acknowledge it's role in their wealth. Nobody is saying Bill G was lazy.... just that Bill G didn't necessarily work 40,000 times harder than the millionaire. Or for that matter 40,000 time smarter than the millionaire.
