  1. I have been on this board ( different avatar, #119 ) since the early days and after a six year hiatus from climbing (rugrats, ratrace) I am catching up on old cc.com. Going through alot of the threads from the past, I keep seeing alot of RIP posts, joepuryear, dave_tripett, a lot of others. Is there a consolidated post for those who passed on?
  2. Bump for the n00bs
  3. I remember years ago someone was planning on building out the old cooling tower in Satsop for a climbing wall similar to this...
  4. did you play around with soloing as well? (e.g. silent partner, continuous loop ).
  5. Lowell - Shows how old school we are, chain-link backstops are cool. I've used them for dry-tooling also, doesn't F up the tools as bad and one can use boots/crampons. Hmm. I may have to find my way down to a couple of old baseball fields to try this... I took the advise, and learned to aid! It was awesome! What kind of system for rope did you use?

  8. Since my sad ass hasn't been up a route in years, I am excited now that my eldest is expressing some interest in climbing. Any thoughts on full-body vs. a regular harness for a 40 pound 5 year old?
  9. RIP Dallas I have his guides ( including old scans ) and in my personal dealings with him, found him to be a humble, driven man. A huge loss...

  11. so I get the feeeling like your,oh so seriouse. Is that anything like climbing the north face of uxbridge road? Very much so. Renton is the sh*t. Here is a pic from a few years ago, before the elementary school janitor chased us off
  12. I have got a budding climber and want to scout out some harnesses for potential purchase. He is about 35 pounds or so, most reviews I have come across have been for kids 5 and up...
  13. Renton is good but the administration at the elementary school are a bit wary about folks cutting across the playground during school hours
  14. Approach : Via B-G trail, fixie used for additional difficulty Gear : Allen wrenches for loose holds Impressions: Nice set up with climbing wall with a mix of cracks, pockets, bolt-ons, and a chimney w/ chockstone. A separate boulder area which pales in comparison to say UW rock but definitely fun. The landing area is shredded rubber. Downside is that the area has no noon - early afternoon shade with a southern exposure. The Enterprise wall heats up pretty quickly ( even with temps in the low 70s today ). O One of the Basic instructors was there and let me peek inside the climbing wall. A couple of ladders lead up to trap doors on top. Seeing that I live mid-way between UW rock and the Mounties, this at least gives me some variety... Pic off flickr
  15. Damn. I remember seeing him around Stone Gardens...f*cking sad RIP Ryan
  16. Body of hiker recovered in Cascades By SCOTT GUTIERREZ P-I REPORTER Rescue workers recovered the body of a 46-year-old hiker who died in an apparent fall near Guye Peak in the Cascades, the King County Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday. The victim, of Sammamish, was reported missing about 8:45 p.m. Monday by his wife. Deputies found his car later Monday at the Snow Lake Trailhead at Alpental, near Snoqualmie Pass, the Sheriff's Office reported. On Tuesday morning, the Sheriff's Office launched its helicopter, Guardian One, enabling deputies to find the man's body in a gully on the east side of Guye Peak. Rescue workers hiked in and were able to get to him by 8 a.m., but he already deceased, the Sheriff's Office reported. The man's name had not yet been released. The victim had planned to go "scrambling," a term for a non-technical method of ascending summits that falls between rock climbing and high-altitude hiking. It generally means going off-trail and over rocks, brush or snow, according to The Olympia Mountaineers Web site. The man's death adds to a precarious late summer for Northwest hikers. Last week, a 27-year-old hiker died when he slipped and fell while hiking on Mount Si near North Bend. In addition, two hikers had to be rescued after being stranded for a one day in the North Cascades. P-I

  18. From Politico Barack Obama's appearance in Denver won't be the first convention speech framed by Greek columns. Republicans who are mocking Obama's appearance haven't mentioned it, but George W. Bush accepted his own nomination in 2004 on a set with a similar neoclassical theme, with columns rising on either side of him, as the pictures above and below show.
  19. fyi that is probably an empty house. SORRY. NEEDED CAMERA FOR RENTON GRANITE GUIDE. YOUR SACRIFICE APPRECIATED!
  20. PI article Two teenage boys were swept away Thursday afternoon by ice or snow after they posed for a photograph in a hollowed-out ice area on Snoqualmie Pass. Rescuers are digging for the two but have yet to find them or hear any sound of them. Officials learned Thursday around 1:30 p.m. that there was an ice cave collapse, an operator with Eastside Dispatch said. The area where the youths are trapped is off the Denny Creek trailhead. It is described as rough and steep and west of the pass and north of Interstate 90. The teens, ages 14 and 17, were exploring and entered the hollowed-out area, Snoqualmie Pass Fire & Rescue Chief Matt Cowan said. "There was a boom or a collapse of some sort. They were either cut off, or it collapsed on them," he said. "But there has been a collapse. We don't know their injuries." The first rescuers on the scene began digging by hand before the specialized equipment arrived. By 3:45 p.m., rescue teams had reached the area with specialized digging equipment, shovels and rope rescue gear, Eastside Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Jeff Griffin said. They had search dogs and thermal-imaging equipment. Griffin said he understands that the teenagers were standing at the mouth of a hollowed-out area where a river exited. "A mom took a picture of them, heard a crash and turned around and they were gone," he said. "It was ice or compact snow, and they were standing underneath." Two men who had been in the area told Griffin the ice or snow was about 4 feet thick. As of 4:20 p.m., rescue teams were not hearing any activity from the hollowed-out area, Griffin said. "Time is critical. That's why we're throwing so many resources at this," he said. Officials believe the two boys are not related. It is raining in the area, and the temperature is in the low 50s. The site of the accident is at least 3,000 feet. The hollowed-out area is about two miles up a trail and near Melakwa Lake. Crews from Bellevue Fire Department, King County Medic One and the U.S. Forest Service also have responded to the scene. There are about 40 people helping with the rescue. The King County Sheriff's Office has dispatched four deputies to help.
