  1. Can't really go outside. Climbed Rainier last weekend. Missed kids first soccer game. Have to spend time with family and make the second game. Rainier showed how much more gear i need.
  2. Which one should I go to? Both are on the 13th.
  3. Since the shelter is closed this weekend, I'm going to hve to bring a tent with me to camp Muir. I can borrow a 4 season tent, but my hubba hubba weighs half as much. Anyone know what these tents can stand up to? Which one should I take?
  4. I'm looking for a parka for Mountaineering and winter camping. Something that can fit over a vest or softshell fleece. Don't want to spend too much money either. Preferably 100 or less. Any suggestions?
  5. I've done the Coleman once, but it was a few years ago. I'd be interested in going again, or doing another route. John
  6. Anyone want to climb the DC this weekend? Might also be interested in hiking or doing some easy rock (I'm a beginner there) or belaying. John
  7. Jordan, I might be interested in meeting at Muir for another try on Rainier. I'm going again either this weekend or next.
  8. Can't give you much advice except to check the Mt rainier climbing blog for current conditions. If you need a third person for the trip, I'd be willing to join.
  9. I am interested in either route, but I will probably not be able to get off work until late thursday. I'm climbed Adams and Baker, and made two attempts on Rainier so far this summer. Both have been thwarted by weather.

    Z pulley techniques

Well, you answered my question. After thinking about I had misunderstood exactly how the thing worked, and I don't want to do it that way. Thanks
  11. A buddy and i went out of the glacier to practice some rescue skills today. We had problems with the prussik that's closest to the crevasse and holds the 2nd pulley. What if instead of attaching the pulley to the rope, we just attached it to an ice ax or something in the snow? Any thought? I plan on trying this, but won't get a chance for a few weeks.
  12. Black, Probably in one of the cubbies under the counter at the public shelter at camp Muir. If it's not there it's on the snowfield somewhere. Will compensate.
  13. I'll post some pics as soon as I figure out how to post them.
  14. Trip: Mount Rainier - D.C. Attempt Date: 8/17/2008 Trip Report: Went up to Camp Muir yesterday and the DC this morning. Turned around just below the top of the cleaver due to a lightning storm on the other side. In retrospect we could have kept going since the weather blew over, but it was a good decision at the time. To make up for it we did some crevasse training on the way down. Many of the wands are gone, but the bootpack was pretty obvious across the Cowlitz and Ingraham. On the Cowlitz it ran between two medium sized crevasses and across a few smaller ones. We had some trouble routfinding on the first part of the cleaver. Gear Notes: Usual Glacier stuff Approach Notes: Just about everything below pebble creek has melted out, and the wildflowers are in bloom. Having to take the trails made the trip from Paradise to pebble creek much longer than on snow in June. Much of the Muir snowfield has melted out, and there are large patches of ice to the climber's left between 8-9k. Also the last few hundred meters to Camp Muir are running water and water ice. I wouldn't do it without crampons.
  15. I was there last night, and the bootpack on the Cowlitz ran a few feet away from some large crevasses and crossed several smaller one.
  16. A friend and I are planning to do the DC route on Rainier this weekend. We're looking for another person for our rope, or another team that we can travel with to have other climbers around in case stuff goes bad. If anyone is interested or needs more for their team, let me know. John
  17. Looking to climb that weekend as well.
  18. When do you want to do it? I'd be interested to do Adams again, but I'm doing DC on Rainier this weekend. Possibly in need of another team member. I might be able to do Adams the weekend after next.
  19. I take along a loaf Garlic Cheddar or Onion bread from Trader Joe's or Great Harvest. Don't know how long it lasts, cause it's never made down the mountain. Before climbing Baker once we all stopped at the Olive Garden to eat. Everyone ordered a pizza, and the server had half of it wrapped in foil for us for the climb.
  20. I'm brand new to the sport, but would be willing to belay, watch and learn. Have all the needed gear. John
  21. I use the red ledge too and love them. Got them at Joe's
  22. How many miles and ft of elevation is this approach?
  23. I've got a pair of BD contact crampons that are a few years old. On my last climb I realized i might want some plates for them, but I can't find any. Does anyone know where I could buy some, or how I could make some of my own?
  24. I see you have no replies so far. I'm at Ft. Lewis, and would be all for you plan if I hadn't had surgery on Monday. I hope find someone.
