  1. Two things i've found very useful on the mountain. Surefire G2 flashlight. Can't beat it for routefinding at night. Small, lightweight and very bright. Platypus 4L or 6L water tank. I carry it collapsed to high camp, then melt snow, or get water to fill it, and I've got plenty for cooking, for the morning and after the summit.
  2. I've got the week off, and want to do some rock climbing. So far I've only climbed indoors. I don't have any lead gear, but have rope, runners, biners, etc. Also willing to belay and learn.
  3. I wouldn't say that.... if you really want, I could spill out the PM's. That won't help your case any.
  4. I also read NW Hikers occasionally. Same user name.
  5. Probably not neccesary, but I usually bring 4 of each for myself. 2 lockers on the harness, one on the snow picket, a non locker on the chest harness plus some spares of each. IF you use the hauling system at least 1/3 of your gear is hanging in the ice, so it's only 8 and 8. This stuff should be obvious common knowledge around here, but it seems he had a bad experience.

    8mm rope belay

I climb with the same rope, so I read this with interest and decided to take mine out today. I used muenter on a BD quicksilver and it held my weight on rappel with no problems.
  8. yeah, kinda late now. think I'll go to exit 38 or one of the rock gyms instead.
  9. Weather forecast turned better, anyone want to climb this weekend? I might just go to Muir and try to get with a team there.
  10. What are some people's opinions of it? Is it thick enough to use on snow?
  11. Good Luck. Baker sounds interesting. I did the Coleman-Deming a few years ago and loved it.
  12. Josh, keep me updated on what you guys plan to do. This weekend is good for me, and i might be able to get Friday off.
  13. Definitely. I'll get off earlier next Friday too, and be in better shape by then. Do you not have enough people this time? PM Sent
  14. probably not Thursday and Friday, and I'd need both. Sorry, didn't check the weather. With a forecast like that I'll probably just spend my time getting in better shape for another time. I'm going to do my best to make it up there before Aug 7th.
  15. I use a camelbak/platypus on the mountain, but my previous post was about one of their 4L/6L water tanks for extra storage.
  16. I'm interested but can't commit just yet, and I'll only be free after friday afternoon. I made 3 attempts on Rainier last year. All 3 were on the DC. Two were aborted due to weather and the third was successful. I've also summited Adams (Mazama glacier) and Baker. I have all the required personal gear, plus a jetboil stove, an Edelweiss 8mm x 30m rope and two Coyote pickets. I'm not in the shape it like to be in though. I'll probably won't be too fast getting to Muir with the big pack, but once I drop some weight there I'll be fine.
  17. One thing that I found very useful is a collapsible water tank by Platypus or similar. I carried it empty up to Muir and then melted snow to fill it so I didn't have to melt any in the morning. It's nice to have extra water to use in the morning. Or some waiting when you get back to high camp.
  18. Possibly. Can't commit yet. What route?
  19. The timing is horrible. The auto industry is on government life support and now he's trying to make it twice as hard on them. It will have much farther reaching consequences than Obama can imagine. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008674720_enviro27.html
  20. I have a hellish work schedule but would be happy to join up if I can.
  21. Already got a jetboil and love it. I want a stove that will burn anything.
