Aahhhh..then I've never done anything trad (yet). Thanks!
-
OK, but why then is trad climbing inherently more scary than sport climbing?
-
A non-climber asks: what the heck is the difference between "sport" and "trad" anyway?

Yay Jeff! What an awesome kitty!

Climb: Mt. Shasta-Avalanche Gulch Date of Climb: 7/7/2006 Trip Report: Began at Bunny Flats on 7/7/06, 10:00am. Bivy at Helen Lake. Reached the summit 10:00am 7/8/06. The trail was mostly clear up to the Sierra Club Hut. Beyond there, cupped and melting snow with portions of exposed rock. Snow was too wet for skins to grab hold and had to carry the splitboard up, no big, just slower. The bivy area at Helen was in good condition but a little soggy in places. We stepped from Helen at 4am, probably should have left at 2-3am as the snow got soft quickly. Our route up and through the Banks had plenty of good steps, lots of traffic that day. Misery Hill still had plenty of ridable snow on the NE side. Stashed the board and pack about 100yds from the final scramble to the top, pictures, laughs, awesome views of Lassen and Mcgloughlin. Sweet ride down on the voile from Misery Hill to the Hut. First 14-er, stoked. Next up: Rainier. Gear Notes: Bucket, axe, crampons, poles, splitboard, layers, lots of UV35.

Thanks for posting the TR. I'll be heading there this weekend, the snow looks great. Hopefully still that way!

A very interesting discussion. This newb is enjoying the debate and, personally, would hate to see any such artificial aid implanted on said route. Who would I sue if I fell and broke an arm?

Melt Snow Without Fuel or a Stove: Use Your Breath

Indeed you can! I would recommend copious amounts of orange-flavored gatorade. Trust me. -
Melt Snow Without Fuel or a Stove: Use Your Breath

DH: Quite true and not an issue if you can sustain physical activity. GS: Not much one can do about that except stop breathing. -
Melt Snow Without Fuel or a Stove: Use Your Breath
valleydude replied to cliffhanger's topic in Climber's Board
Close. While you do not lose water in generating heat to melt snow which you have eaten, the energy transfer does lower your body's temperature which increases the risk of hypothermia. The resulting caloric loss must be replenished with some form of nutrition or food source, which requires water to digest and transport throughout your body. This why eating snow or ice is not recommend to hydrate yourself unless necessary to keep you alive long enough for a rescue. -

Yeah, looks like Hood's in for a serious dump into next week..does anyone go up in such avy prone conditions? Perfect for snowboarding though. -
Amazing pics! I still haven't made it to the summit yet. Is anyone else out there waiting on the weather to attempt? This newb is bored with riding the lifts!
