[TR] Beacon Rock - Lone Wolf and the Last Hurrah 9/12/2009
kevbone replied to King Beatard's topic in Oregon Cascades
Man Bill…..you are a push over for a good troll these days…… Took the words right out of my mouth…..do you see the irony in that statement? PS…..I was not referring to breaking the law by speeding……. -
Yada yada yada.....except Zeitgeist poked so many holes in what the government told you happened that it raised a reasonable doubt. Remember, we all get our information from the same places. At the end of the day, you will believe what you want to believe.

http://www.doublex.com/section/life/rock-climbing-only-truly-gender-blind-sport I was rock climbing in August just outside Las Vegas with a seasoned mountaineer named Patrick when our gearhead chatter about men’s vs. women’s climbing shoes prompted a question about gender. I asked Patrick, a rescue climber and guide who helped start one of the first Vegas rock gyms, about the performance potential of guys vs. girls. Gender parity in climbing is uncommonly common, in contrast with the dozen or so sports in which I’ve competed or dabbled (and the many I’ve spectated). In the four years since I started, I’ve routinely seen women match or best the efforts of much burlier men. But until recently, I still assumed that the guys, as in every other sport I know, could ultimately go higher, faster, stronger.

Beacon Rock: Note on anchors and 'loose' rocks
kevbone replied to JosephH's topic in Oregon Cascades
Hmmm. With all due respect, I would posit that people looking at that anchor and thinking twice about it says more about the state of trad knowledge and experience today. The interpretation of "08" is a matter of basic common sense and at the very least should have conveyed the notion that it was an actively maintained anchor. There was nothing about the appearance of the anchor that should have given one pause from a materials standpoint. Two independent 1" sliding-X slings installed in 2008 would be solid to hang your car from for the next five years minimum. Testing has shown one inch milspec sling material is bomb after completely fading out to white, and the fading wasn't significant on the anchor in question. The tie-wraps keep the the tandem sliding-X slings paired and organized and they do actually afford all necessary inspection of the installation. BUT, you do have to some idea what you're looking at and some familiarity with the materials in question. That anyone would think they're better off replacing two independent slings and SS rings of any age with a badly installed single sling and ring combo (or just skipping the webbing and rings altogether) defies all notions of common sense and logic. Bottomline? However well intended, it was an bad judgment call from a trad climbing perspective and one that belies either rank inexperience, gross incopetence, or both. In either case it was done by someone who doesn't realize they have neither the experience nor judgment to be making such calls on such a public and well-travelled venue. But, c'est la vie. It's hard to tell.....is that a slam? -
I think.

Beacon Rock: Note on anchors and 'loose' rocks
kevbone replied to JosephH's topic in Oregon Cascades
Assuming you are counting the traverse as pitch two..... As you head up and left from the anchor below the horn. There is a bomber nut placement eye level out and right from just below the horn. Or....skip that way and go up and right from the anchor. See the posts above. -
Chode boy. I understand where you are coming from. I suppose for a simpleton it is easier to just accept everything as face value.

You dont need an application. I promise if you show up on a monday and start pounding and drilling the ranger is not going to come down. Just do it. What they dont know wont hurt them. -
Alex. Beyond the glory was rated 11.d by the FA's. I have heard 10+ / 11.c depending on your fitness. I believe folks climb BTG because its is over bolted and most sport climbers like to feel warm and fuzzy inside. IMO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Center_controlled_demolition_conspiracy_theories 7 World Trade Center was a 47-story skyscraper that stood across Vesey Street north of the main part of the World Trade Center site. Though not hit by a plane, it was hit by debris from the WTC towers and damaged by fires which burned for seven hours, until it collapsed at about 5:20 p.m. on the evening of September 11. Several videos of the event exist in the public domain thus enabling comparative analysis from different angles of perspective. Some proponents of World Trade Center controlled demolition conspiracy theories suggest that 7 WTC was demolished because it served as an operational center for the alleged conspiracy, while others believe the government also wanted to destroy key files held there about corporate fraud. According to a statement reported by the BBC, Dylan Avery thinks the building was suspicious because it had some unusual tenants such as a CIA field office and several government agencies. The former chief counter-terrorism adviser to the President, Richard Clarke, does not think that 7 WTC is mysterious, and said that anyone could have rented floor space in the building.[49] No steel frame high rise had ever before collapsed because of a fire.[50] BBC News reported the collapse of 7 WTC twenty minutes before it actually fell. The BBC has stated that many news sources were reporting the imminent collapse of 7 WTC on the day of the attacks.[51] Jane Standley, the reporter who announced the collapse prematurely, called it a "very small and very honest mistake" caused by her thinking on her feet after being confronted with a report she had no way of checking.[52] Steven Jones says the debris contained sulfuric compounds, suggesting that thermate, a mixture of thermitic materials and sulfur, might have been used to destroy the building.[53][54] He asserts that videos show a yellow molten substance, which he identifies as iron, splashing off the side of the South Tower about 50 minutes after the airplane's impact. According to Jones, pictures also show white ash of aluminium-oxide, another product of the thermite reaction.[4] Professor Richard Sisson of Worcester Polytechnic Institute thinks the sulfur came from gypsum in the wallboards.[49] The NIST's question and answer page for the 7 WTC investigation also mentions the presence of sulphur in the gypsum wallboard, and states that an analysis of the steel for thermite or thermate would therefore not necessarily be conclusive.[55] In the PBS documentary America Rebuilds, which aired in September 2002, Larry Silverstein, the owner of 7 WTC and leaseholder and insurance policy holder for the remainder of the WTC Complex, recalled a discussion with the fire department in which doubts about containing the fires were expressed. Silverstein recalled saying, "We've had such terrible loss of life, maybe the smartest thing to do is pull it". "They made that decision to pull", he recalled, "and we watched the building collapse." Silverstein issued a statement that it was the firefighting team, not the building, that was to be pulled.[49][56][57]
