  1. Yes, I think BD should replace that tool. Not the tool that is outside of the recall, but the one that is should be replaced or repaired. 12 years ago they would have done it becouse the tool is unsafe, they should test or replace it now. Shape wise - give him a Venom; tech and cost wise - a Viper or Cobera. Or give him A Venom OR a discount on a a Viper or Cobera. Comunicate to him about other modes of failure. If that happens offer him a discount on a new tool. No cost for BD, good for their image. The recall notice says test, return or replace. The OP wants them tested becouse he can not afford a new tool. If they will not test, replace. As a consumer and a climber who has a lot of BD gear on their rack, this is the kind of stuff that I will remember and will think about when looking at new gear (and yes I know alot of the time BD is fantastic; but if they have put out an safty advisory - what the hell is BD thinking not doing their best to get unsafe and recalled gear back?) Edited to add: if the tool is really in the condition that the OP indicated (ie very lighly used) I doubt that 12 years in storage (asuming a clean, dry space) counts as at the end of the tools life.
  2. The notice says that the CFBPs will be, ``inspected and either returned, rebuilt or replaced within 15 working days``. The notice has no expiery date, I think BD needs to remain true to their product safety advisory. NOT repairing or replacing the tool might mean some liability if the owner does not send them in b/c he can not afford a new pair. As in BD refused to honour their own Product Safety Advisory after the OP contacted them. Also what if this means that someone else does not return their CFBP after reading this and gets hurt (admitedly small chance). BD made an unsafe tool and their need to either repair it, refund him the cost (not really feasable) or replace it with something equivalent. There is no reason the OP should be having to pay for this. I am suprised by BD; in the sceme of things its a small part of the cost of doing buisness and right now they look bad.
  3. I'm not sure why they do not just replace them. Seems like 10 years ago that was what they would do. I`m not sure why the hastle? If the tools are unsafe in my mind they have a responsability to get them back and leave you with a tool that is safe. I understand the issue with upgrading you for free and it being a cost to them, but isent that the cost of doing bussness. At the time the CFBP`s were the top of the line tool. They could at least give you a set of Vennoms and tech picks.
  4. Hi, just wondering what you guys bring for long routes in the mountains where you think some or some moderate amounts of aid might be nessecery? If I'm going light I might make an aider out of slings or just bring one. For heavier trips I usualy bring two Metolious pocket aiders on ovalwires, a long dynema daisy (for the other I use slings), and a fi-fi or carabines. Two Cliffhangers, two #2 Peckers and two Al heads. I have a Simond Fox hammer that I use as a tool/hammer. For the secound Tiblocs, prussics, or ropemen usualy. Am I missing anything? Can I make it more efficent/lighter? What are your thoughts? What do you use?
  5. Whats the deal with their umbilical system? Is it like one of those via-fereta systems w/ a built in screamer?
  6. Two matched sets of BD 5-step aid ladders for sale. Used but with much life left. 45 shipped. robpatterson5gmailcom
  7. Firn gilder is almost what I'm looking for but I'd like to be able to use it in Alaska or in the winter to approach climbs (obviously anything longer then 5-10km and I'd be looking for a longer ski). But really what I'm looking for is an alternative to snowshoes at about their weight and length/awkwardness climbing.
  8. Mark, that's what I was thinking. I'm used to cross-country skiing so I'm worried that the snow blades are going to be more like slippery snowshoes and less like skis on the way up - but I'm unsure if I want to go longer with leathers hiking/skiing/glisiding down! 160 XCD's look like a great setup but its starting to weigh a bit and wondering if snowshoes might not be better for the weight. I am looking for a set of 300s though if your thinking of selling...
  9. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with approach skis that they wanted to share? I was thinking of putting some 404's on a pair of salomon snow blades and wondered if anyone had used anything simpler with their leathers? Cheers
  10. I have a pair of spare Scapra Lasers for sale in excellent condition, I just don't need two pairs of boots. I'm thinking 150 plus shipping, OBO. My email is robpatterson5gmailcom Cheers
  11. Thanks Doug I think that explains what I've been hearing re: sizeing on bpl
  12. Thanks - any comments on the sizeing? I've heard that its a little wonky? I think I'm thinking of the same layering system as you are using; I'm usually a medium or a small (5'9, 160 lb).
  13. Anyone used the Cocoon Parka from BPL.com? I've been looking at it for a bit since it seems like a 10oz version of the Patagonia.
  14. Hey, its last years model - my camera is a little funky at the moment so pics might be an issue if you need them right now. My email is robpatterson5gmailcom
  15. I agree with both posters. My dream rack would be a set of C3's to C4s, then as doubles Master cams to black and C4s on up. FWIW I've found the 2 and 3 in Power Cams to be good with gloves, the smaller sizes? - depends on the glove.
  16. Patagonia Ready Mix Jacket: Size Mens Medium. Red. Excellent shape, a little discoloration at the cuffs but otherwise like new. A little too light for me. 160 OBO - seriously, just make it good.
  17. lol, I don't think so - you aren't thinking of Grivel tools maybe?
  18. I got a pair of the new cobras this past spring when a store was clearing out their demo's. Lots of little 'bubbles' in the coating along the back of the shaft when I got them - look like they were from pounding pins. Also put a real nick in one hammering a pin this summer, would recommend the old hammers as they add to the clearance and help with this issue (I also like the swing better). Great tools and most of the damage to the shafts appears cosmetic - still not all that impressed vs/ Al. tools; wondering if this is maybe a bad batch, next time I might go with the Vipers if all things are more or less equal (as they appeared to be at the time).
  19. Hey, I'm out east in Ontario, send me a email at robpatterson5gmailcom
  20. Looking to clear out some stuff before the new year that is not seeing any use. Some very nice pieces and some good deals here. All prices are OBO and shipping should be a few dollars. Well used but lots of life left. 10 dollars each, prefer to sell as a set. Camp Ice Raider Crampons, strap on bindings, good shape - 60 USD MSR 1L Ti handless pot, gradations inscribed in the side and comes with a handled fry-pan lid (or you can use tin foil for even greater weight savings). - 35 USD Marmot Trestles(?) sleeping bag.
