My father-in-law gave me a pair of vintage wool knickers a few years ago. They're actually great for XC skiing, but only if no one's around to point and laugh...
Iain, your fey spidey is creeping me out.

Now what about that new Alan Watts Smith guidebook. Urban legend or not

Yeah, let's beat that horse some more.

There's a huge wind farm down by Palm Springs, CA. Driving by it at night on my way to Joshua Tree it looked really eerie.
I wonder how much they think about migratory paths when they're building those windmills.

Maybe I should hang out at the Meadows parking lot and sell folks in SUVs my "Guilt Pass" for $2.
All proceeds will go towards tuning up my bike, buying new trucks for my skateboard, buying new shoes for my walk to work... supporting my sustainable transport program will magically cancel out all their bad karma.
Seriously, though...are there bird species that are threatened with extinction because of windmills placed in their migratory paths? Are you saying it's on a par with what the dams in the NW have done to the salmon population?

That's an incredible photo.

You haven't heard about the magic dam?
I guess my thinking is that lakes are going to collect more waste than a given spot in a creek, because they're not getting flushed out as quickly. Also because the spot on a lake that I'm likely to be collecting water (just off the shore) is also the place where there's most likely going to be waste from animals/humans camping nearby.
And I don't usually take water unfiltered from streams draining lakes. The farther upstream the better I figure.
I know it's not very scientific, though.

Cluck -- was that your party trying this route on Saturday? We saw a group of 4 going up that way yesterday but I think they turned around, since we didn't see them on top.

Sounds like fun, Chris!
Weekdays are probably better for me too. A throbbing headache the morning after really won't affect my productivity much at all...

Everybody has this photo (usually with a lot less gear and minus the haulbag though)

Whatever.
He wasn't nominating it for Alpinist 10 - he's just showing that he put that Mountie training to use.
As much as they are fun to tease about stunts like dirt-rappeling, they deserve credit for giving him the training to get up Liberty Crack.

What Squid said. Good job, tomtom.

It's the return of glissading-in-shorts guy!

Has anyone been up Leuthold Couloir or in the neighborhood of that route recently? Thinking about going up on Saturday and wondering about conditions.
Thanks.

Wow, my list is so modest....
* Elephant's Perch, Mountaineer's Route
* Warbonnet
* Mt. Heyburn, Stur Chimney
* Rainier, Kautz Glacier
* Monkey Face, West Face variation

Rocky Butte is close, has a lot of moderate single-pitch routes, and you can set up a toprope on pretty much anything if you want. It might be kinda muddy out there right now though.
But for a really fun time, do what Tex and Iain have suggested and go out to Beacon. SE corner has a lot of fun variations.

Want: swimming pool (like they have under that bridge in Corvallis)
Don't want: hard bouldering problems that make me feel feeble and inadequate
