it's funny. my kids have better stamina now, so exercise sometimes just gets them wired on endorphins and I end up being more tired. :-)

when my kids are misbehaving, I tell them it's obvious they have too much energy and need to do a hike up Granite Mountain or Mailbox Peak with me. They usually settle down after that.

The dad is likely one do give him a good swat at home, and probably would prefer to do the same in public since the key to successful discipline is consistency. Excellent point, Eric, and one I almost posted myself. When I was little and misbehaving in public, my mother would pinch me. And they were painful as hell - she would get a tiny fold of skin and pinch hard. This was presumably to avoid making a commotion (e.g. if she swatted me) and always in a public place with a lot of people around. Much quieter and very effective to give a quick painful pinch then a swat. Also less embarassing for me as a kid since nobody knew what was going on.

Daniel, Granite Mtn via ridge run and McClellan Butte (again, both very easy), Snowking (overnighter - sept), Hidden Lake Peaks (scramble to 2nd peak), Cashmere Mtn, several Tatoosh Peaks (e.g. pinnacle). Next June head down to Shasta, esp if you ski - a great, easy snow scramble on a 14-er.

I doubt the facts of your story and your evaluation of the situation based simply on your previously-expressed permissive parenting style. The facts of my story are irrelevant. The question still remains…..what do you do in a public place where there is child abuse going on? I consider permissive parenting child abuse.
