  1. (Ivan should appreciate this) Then his fell soul a thought of vengeance bred; (Unworthy of himself, and of the dead;) The nervous ancles bored, his feet he bound With thongs inserted through the double wound; These fix’d up high behind the rolling wain, His graceful head was trail’d along the plain. Proud on his car the insulting victor stood, And bore aloft his arms, distilling blood. He smites the steeds; the rapid chariot flies; The sudden clouds of circling dust arise. Now lost is all that formidable air; The face divine, and long-descending hair, Purple the ground, and streak the sable sand; Deform’d, dishonour’d, in his native land, Given to the rage of an insulting throng, And, in his parents’ sight, now dragg’d along! The mother first beheld with sad survey; She rent her tresses, venerable grey, And cast, far off, the regal veils away. With piercing shrieks his bitter fate she moans, While the sad father answers groans with groans Tears after tears his mournful cheeks o’erflow, And the whole city wears one face of woe: No less than if the rage of hostile fires. From her foundations curling to her spires, O’er the proud citadel at length should rise, And the last blaze send Ilion to the skies. The wretched monarch of the falling state, Distracted, presses to the Dardan gate. Scarce the whole people stop his desperate course, While strong affliction gives the feeble force: Grief tears his heart, and drives him to and fro, In all the raging impotence of woe. At length he roll’d in dust, and thus begun, Imploring all, and naming one by one: “Ah! let me, let me go where sorrow calls; I, only I, will issue from your walls (Guide or companion, friends! I ask ye none), And bow before the murderer of my son. My grief perhaps his pity may engage; Perhaps at least he may respect my age. He has a father too; a man like me; One, not exempt from age and misery (Vigorous no more, as when his young embrace Begot this pest of me, and all my race). How many valiant sons, in early bloom, Has that cursed hand send headlong to the tomb!
  2. One incident I had in mind was Mt. Dickerman in Feb. The trail.
  3. 1000 pages of obfuscated legalise babble. Nobody but a herd of lawyers can (or will) even attempt to read that POS.
  4. A couple folks whom I know who died in the mountains were on non-technical hikes/scrambles. It made me question whether simply "scaling back" (from roped climbing to less-technical mountain pursuits) in and of itself really helps.
  5. let's hear yours then, you window-licking jizz-gargler
  6. "Stephen Hawking and his new Research Assistant, 'Thing', receive the first of 16 Medals of Freedom awarded today. Family member John "Lurch" Kerry was not in attendance."
  7. "A glimpse into future alternative treatments under Obama-care: Stephen Hawking models his new body-part transplant, which has vastly improved his quality of life, allowing him to comb his own hair..."
  8. Was she fishin' with Jimmie Carter?
  9. What didja get your butt kicked on this time? Oh, I'm pretty sure my hit rate has been somewhat higher than yours in recent years. Dude, Pope would crush you on Rainier - off the couch, with blue Asolo rentals, and a watermelon tied to his ass!
  10. for a while the rate on Rainier was about 3-4 in <10000. It's changed the last few years. I think Rainier has not had a death in like 3 years.
  11. closing in on "photos of Really Big house cats"...
  12. Do you know folks who have died in the service? I know several who have died in the mountains. Every time someone I know dies, I sure do rethink the climbing thing.
  13. "alpine climbing" seems to cover a lot. certainly there is a big difference between 'climbing' say, Sahale via Sahale Arm, climbing the Torment-Forbidden Traverse, or Liberty Ridge. Giving it all up for kids? I don't think so. Giving up some of it, yeah.
  14. oh so Obama's in on it too? Joe Biden and W were sitting in the Oval Office playing a shoot-em-up game on the XBox... or so they thought. Cheney had substituted remote controls for 4 commercial jets which Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum crashed. B-HO can't dump Biden now and is stuck with the cover-up.
  15. Exactly. Either agree with Raindawg and Pope, or STFU, because you are "unqualified" to participate in the "discussion" (what a misnomer). As I said before, these fanatics can not comprehend how they can clearly be so RIGHT in such a clear-cut position as theirs - one for which there is no other possible valid position to have. So, STFU, everyone, listen to what Dawg and Pope have to say (yet again), kow-tow, kiss their feet (and ass) and agree with them absolutely. That's your choice. Allah akbar! Exactly.
  16. did you lick your lips? Dung beetles don't have lips shit-for-brains. you seem angry
  17. Excellent. I like glaciers.
  18. 10,000 years from now. that would be some ice age!
  19. bolts are not OK if you are a higher end face climber needing protection on a unprotectable area with runout they are OK if you are a 5.9 sporto doing 3-star routes in a guidebook. rich.
  20. You thought? I don't think so.
  21. Seahawks? Is that you?
  22. Inside your skull! that would imply there was something there to begin with
