How do you clip your belay biner to your harness?
scrambled_legs replied to Alyosha's topic in Newbies
nice.... ya this happend years ago when I was taking my first and only mountaineering coarse through school. There were 2 guides to 30 students with no gear. I guess its a real struggle to get any funding from the college for any equipment. It worked kinda well because we were able to try out the munter and not have to worry about coming up with thirty rappel devices. We coulda made them out of biners and we did in a different class but being out there, we didn't have the time to set them up and double check them for 30 newbies. What an eye opener though... made me really start thinking about what can happen to you with tried and tested procedures. As for tying it so that it screws the gate on, I guess it just depends which side you are braking on as there is only one way to tie it. I'll have to look at that next time I get stuck. A munter is a life saver and neccessary to know especially when you're the "little spoon." -

How do you clip your belay biner to your harness?
scrambled_legs replied to Alyosha's topic in Newbies
I don't think the question is whether putting the biner through the leg and waist loop or just the belay loop, will reduce the strength of the harness. Rather the question is what it does to the biner. Tying through the two leg loops is supposed to make the biner prone to cross loading. This is why the harness manufactures recomend against it. I think whether or not this happens depends entirely on what biner you're using and how you have it positioned. Try hanging in your harness and check if the rope is in the top corner away from the gate and the harness loops in the lower corner away from the gate. If so, then there is no problem setting up your harness this way. If the harness is holding the biner sideways, or the harness loops aren't in the same corner, then the forces on the biner will cause it to fault sooner. I use a petzl attache biner with the wide end up and the locking gate in. Whenever my harness is weighted, the two harness loops end up in the corner with the rope in the other end. Another thing to think about is using your harness to protect your screwgate. If you ever rappel on a Munter hitch always put your biner through the leg and waist loops not the belay loop. This way you can have the screw gate covered by the two loops. I saw a guy rappeling off a ridge with a munter hitch and the biner through the belay loop. The munter twisted the biner around until the rope was rubbing the gate. As he was coming down the final 10 feet, he started moving really quick. Turns out the rope with all the twisting, unscrewed his gate and completely undid the knot. He ended up on falling onto the snow with the rope simply passing through the biner. The knot was tied properly and the gate was locked before he started down. We were with an instructor and everything was checked before he let him go down. The instructor was blown away by it. He was 60+ years old and had been climbing since he was 16. He said he never heard of it happening, but he also never had a belay loop until then. -

When was the last time you acutualy USED a fluke?
scrambled_legs replied to layton's topic in The Gear Critic
I think 30 is right actually... It won't pull out easy. It'll pull down easy as it is pointing in the direction of pull but because of the angle is forced deeper, not ripped out. Try it sometime, they're freakin' bomber!! -
When was the last time you acutualy USED a fluke?
scrambled_legs replied to layton's topic in The Gear Critic
Thats where you're wrong. A fluke is almost never placed 90 degrees to the horizontal. The cable that is attatched to the fluke, is set up to continuously pull the fluke at approx. a 45 degree angle down and towards the load if the load is horizontal on a flat snow field, the fluke will pull at a 45 degree angle down and in the direction of pull. In the same way, on a vertical snow field it will pull down (into the snow) and at a 45 degree angle toward the direction of pull (towards the climber). The only thing different on a flat snowfield and a veritcal one, is gravity. The Fluke isn't affected by gravity, only the direction of pull is. The direction of pull will remain horizontal to the snow regardless of the steepness. Imagine it is like an Ice Screw. You don't compare it to the steepness of ice when placing it, only the angle relative the surface of the ice. -
Well I definately don't think hooters do so well cause they done got good speech vocabulary dats fo sore.

What do you mean out the other side?? Are you talking about hitting the rock underneath, or a placement where there is a thin snow capped ridge without any ground between the two slopes? Never heard of this one before. -
Conan is wacked, twisted and demented. I can't believe anyone on here is upset about that. They had one part on the show where they had the little Quebec children eating the frozen maple sugar on a stick. Then they had Truimph (dog puppet) piss in the snow and the little kids eating it. I don't think I ever laughed so hard at a late night show. I thought he did go overboard with the being obnoxious because you're French. I was kinda surprised at that cause it was just a straight out insult and not even funny, which made me kinda laugh at the same time as going holy crap the French would kill him if they weren't so quick to surrender. I mean really he had a good point. When the one man was yelling at him for not speaking French he started yelling back to wake up and look at where he was living. It was like everything that us Westerners want to say but are too afraid of our Country getting divided over it. We just paid $750,000 to have someone from the U.S. do it. This way, when Quebec has their hissy fit, we can just say it was an ignorant American and we don't feel that way at all. Meanwhile we can chuckle as we think back to the look on thier faces as we replaced their French only signs with something that we should both be able to understand.

Rock and Iceclimbing in Victoria??
scrambled_legs replied to scrambled_legs's topic in Climber's Board
Yup ferries suck just as bad as fairies. I guess I'll just have to live with it and call in sick a lot!! Thanks for the info -
There's some rock climbing in the Eaderly escarpment which is by the Gatineau raceway. Some funky rock and fairly short pitches but a whole lot of fun if the bugs are hiding. Get a book from MEC and then plan on trips to the Gunks for some quality climbs. There are a few other places that are better than the escarpment but they are further drives. As for Ice, I didn't do any when I was there but I had a few people tell me that there were some really good routes in Quebec. Just go into MEC and talk to the guys at the climbing counter. I found that most of them go pretty hardcore for Easterners. Oh and if you're going to school at Carleton, get ready for Wednesdays at Ollie's... what a bong show. Have fun... the people make up for the terrain although stick to the Quebec side if you don't like girls with pot bellies.

You think Fundamentalists = Terrorist??? What kind of twisted hillbilly are you???? The terrorists are all extreme views of a fundamental belief! If you do believe I'm a terrorist why do I bore you??? have you no fear??? Your pot-fried ass is about to be scrambled!!! Why don't you go smoke some more pot and dream of those hairy apes which you want to prove scientifically that its o.k. to make love to. Oh and by the way, I don't consider myself to be a christian but like to defend their beliefs over some hairbrained conception thats been outdated years ago.

Ironically, it's only a myth that people in previous centuries believed that the earth was flat, despite what you were taught in school. (the origins of this misunderstanding actually go back to the conflict between Darwinism and Creationism.) If you're at all geeky, it's a good one to research. The website I've cited details how this myth was started in the 1860s. Well you just re-instated my views. We are being taught false facts in the school system but because of our age and the advanced knowledge of those teaching us, we accept them as fact. The facts that have been disproven regarding evolution should be removed from the textbook when teaching the evolution theory. As well, evolution should be taught as the scientist's percieve it... a theory.

Well, I guess I could post other's views too... Interview with Duane T. Gish, PhD* 1. You have earned your spurs in the trenches, as a distinguished scientist, debating the controversy surrounding explanations for life on earth. Describe your academic credentials. B.S. (Chemistry), U.C.L.A., 1949. Ph.D. (Biochemistry), University of California, Berkeley, 1953. Research Assistant, 1953-1955; Assistant Professor, 1955-1956; Cornell University Medical College, New York City. Research Associate, 1956-1960, Virus Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley. Research Biochemist, 1960-1971, The Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Associate Director and Vice-President, the Institute for Creation Research, 1971-present. Author or co-author of about 35 papers published in scientific journals. Author of about ten books (five in print) and numerous articles on creation verses evolution. Lectures in 49 of 50 states and in about 40 foreign countries. 2. And you are also a believing and practicing Christian? And you believe in the miracle of creation by God as described in Genesis? I accepted Christ as Savior and Lord at age ten and have always accepted the Biblical account of creation described in the Book of Genesis. 3. Is there any reason that religion and science should not complement one another rather than be mutually exclusive? How about the suggestion that a Creator God implicitly is the author of all science? When the Bible is correctly interpreted and the facts of science are correctly interpreted, there are no contradictions between them. What we see of the universe and what we discover in biology and all other fields of science reveal the products of our Creator God. 4. What moment in your life marked the beginning of your commitment to the Christian faith? What single event solidified that faith? My commitment to the Christian faith began when I accepted Christ as Savior. Everything I learned in my studies and research strengthened my confidence that all of life had to have been created by an omnipotent Creator. There has never been any doubt in my mind that the origin of life and of each basic kind of plant and animal demands a supernatural Creator external to and independent of the natural universe. 5. What do you consider the single most persuasive evidence that convinced you that God created the heavens and the earth by His command? In my scientific studies several things are most impressive in the evidence they give of God’s creation. Concerning the origin of the universe, the Second Law of Thermodynamics establishes the fact of creation. This law says that an isolated system of any kind cannot begin in a state of chaos and disorder and transform itself into a more highly ordered, more highly complex system. The universe could not have created itself. The fossil record reveals gaps so complete and of such immensity that biological evolution can absolutely be excluded, but the evidence is just as predicted based on creation. Finally, the evidence for design and purpose that is so pervasive throughout the universe could not have been created by an evolutionary process with no goal, no purpose, no intelligence, guided solely by blind processes. 6. What do you see as the single weakest link in the evolutionary hypothesis, from the perspective of a scientist? The weakest link in the evolutionary process as most widely accepted, the neo-Darwinian mechanism, is its total inability to explain the origin of totally new and complex system. Even a growing number of evolutionists are losing faith in Darwinism. For example, the Swedish biologist and evolutionist, Dr. Soren Lovtrup, has stated that he believes “someday the Darwinian myth will be ranked the greatest deceit in the history of science”. Unfortunately for Dr. Lovtrup, his suggested mechanism is every bit as bad. 7. Recently I read that you were honored for participating in at least 300 creation/evolution debates and were affectionately nicknamed “bulldog” by some of your admirers. Is it feasible to attack an opponent’s intellectual view while showing Christian respect and regard for the person? In debates with evolutionists it is very important to show respect to your opponent and maintain a cordial exchange of views, even when, on rare occasions, your opponent is rude and attacks you personally. To do otherwise would weaken your case. 9. Within your knowledge, did you ever change the mind of a debating evolutionist or an observing evolutionist in the audience? The evolutionists that are willing to get on a public platform and debate an informed creationist are almost always so philosophically set in their minds materialistically that no matter how persuasive the evidence presented by the creationist may be, they refuse to consider this as evidence for creation since they believe that no creator exists, therefore, there can be no evidence for creation. No doubt, however, some with more open minds have been impressed by the evidence for creation, although not willing to give up their faith in evolution. We have had many testimonies by those who came to debates as unbelievers, even atheists, and were persuaded and became creationists and many of whom consequently became Christians. * Dr. Duane T. Gish, distinguished scientist, and champion of the Christian faith, speaks from a half-century of front-line experience exposing evolutionism’s shortfall. A Fellow with the American Institute of Chemists, author of eight books, and champion of the truth about God’s creation miracle, Dr. Gish has earned the respect of those touched by his words. Remember, any scientist that has become a Christian has examined both theories, whereas the majority of scientists attempting to prove evolution, have never been exposed to the facts making up the theory of Creation.

Exactly my point... so its important to acknowledge what you are saying when you start spouting about creation not being possible and evolution being the only truth. In fact I think the possiblity of the EVOLUTION THEORY being correct should be taught in the upper levels of Biology. Although the facts that have been disproven, such as the various skull discoveries, should be omitted. It should not be taught as fact on the lower levels other than the slight adaptions that take place through creatures throughout time, as that is the only known fact. It's good to have theories about things that aren't certain but until it is certain, it shouldn't be taught as fact. The earth was known by everyone to be flat at one time. Despite the obvious clues, such as ships hulls dissapearing then the rigging slowly getting swallowed in the distance until just the flag flying at the top is visible. There is lots of evidence that has come forward dissproving the theory of evolution as we know it. The only way you can come up with concrete theories is to examine all the facts disputing one. Once things are found to be false, we have to remove them from the equation. If we simply ignore evolution we will never learn the truth. The sad thing is that there are so many people so quick to swallow what ever is taught to them, that they are all stuck in the flat earth mindset.

Couldn't find a website with in detail facts, I'll look around a little more later. Try this link for now as it explains the just of the discoveries: http://evolutionlie.faithweb.com/piltdown.html

If this is how you see it then how about, Evolution is society's coping mechanism for the harsh reality that they're going to hell. They provide a half-baked hypothesis that is supposed to comfort them so they can feel guilt free while sinning. Huh? How so? Christianity says that if you're good then you'll go to Heaven when you die, and you'll keep living up there. Thus it's comforting when your son dies, because you know he'll keep living in heaven and you'll see him there. Also, when life sucks, you can console yourself that you'll go to heaven soon and life is perfect here. That's how it's comforting. But how does the theory of evolution comfort us and keep us from feeling guilty? Christianity isn't peaches and roses. It also provides rigid guidlines that you have to follow in order to obtain heaven. It's a lot harder to live these guidlines than it is to deny they exist through the belief of Evolution. As a Christian you also know and belive in a hell. Simply having a good son doesn't mean you'll see him in heaven. He too has to give his life to the lord. Evolution says we are free to do whatever we want. There is no afterlife simply science.

Oh and stoner... you havent' answered my question. If evolution disputes creation than how was the beginning matter formed? The very Science that evolution is based upon also states that you can't create something out of nothing. Maybe it is a good thing to take a step back and simpilize things!
-
What's evolution got to do with Hell? BTW, I'll see you there, if it exists. I just stated the other reflection of views. Many people pass of religion as an emotional escape to the fact that their life sucks. I on the other hand believe that evolution is just as much of an escape. If you believe in the extreme view of evolution rather than small adaptations through time, than you can't believe in Christianity. If you don't believe in Christianity, then you don't have to worry about upholding morals, not porking the girlfriend and the wife, swearing, getting drunk, orgies (as if any of us have had the chance.. ahahah) So those evolutionists that pass off christianity, may be so concentrated on evolution being true that they are simply seeing what they want to see. I mean they don't have to worry about going to hell no matter how bad they screw up here. Its a lot harder to be a christian than an evolutionalist

I hope you believe in Evolution cause you're going to Hell!

Still waiting for some comments from the The pig is an unclean animal [sOURCE: Pulpfiction] therefore since humans have learned to be clean we cannot come from pigs!!! Besides which we like to eat Bacon and Cannibalism is bad!!! HOWEVER we also cannot come from Monkeys. Monkeys throw shit at each other so are therfore unclean animals!!! BUT maybe pigs, monkeys and us ALL EVOLVED from some common ancestor...it would be small like a monkey, unclean like a pig and smart like a human... it must be the ALIEN. Aliens crash landed or a colony failed on Earth. Some of the aliens went to live in the trees and became hairier for protection and learned to say Ook and fling shit at each other. These are the Apes. Some of the aliens were hungry and ate garbage. Over time as they ate more garbage they got fatter and pinker and became PIGS!!!! OK? so far? WE are the aliens that tried to keep our own technology. This explains CHARIOTS OF FIRE and the Nazca Lines. Any questions Can I quote you for my Psychology Analysis paper??? Actually I think we are simply proving the one known scientific fact with this post... climbers are Mad!!! There are no signs of inteligent life in them hills. Isn't it great to be able to go to a place where we all fit in!!
