  1. Peter Puget. I remain convinced that the economy is still recovering. Also, though you didn't mention anything of it, a bullish stock market and the overall health of the economy are two different things. BTW, I share your sentiment that Bush will probably see another term, however, I believe it'll be through election shenanigans and PR extravagandas. He'll pull for an October surprise, most likely if the Iraqi situation works out and he effectively reduces our presence there. However, do you recall something called the Tet Offensive? It ain't over until the fat lady sings.
  2. I love that painting(?), Minx! Can I have one for my cubicle? I wonder who made it? the hues remind me of franz marc or kandinsky. probably from the Blaue Reiter period. Kandinsky? WTF?? Kandinsky's shizzle is abstract. Looks more like it was created by the guy who illustrated Curious George.
  3. Ahh...the shortcomings of communication. he kept trying, he kept trying but he couldn't find out why he couldn't stop crying/ only so many songs can be sung with two lips, two lungs and one tongue/ she kept praying, she kept praying that he would understand what she was saying/ only so many songs can be sung with two lips, two lungs and one tongue/ he kept dreaming, he kept dreaming of the day they'd realize what he was feeling/ only so many songs can be sung with two lips, two lungs and one tongue
  4. Naw, it's a true story ( did a search in the stacks and found link to the story ). These are bootleg photos. BTW, you have to establish a username and password to look at the original article. The link is present about 1/3 way down the search page. 14. Seems I read somewhere, maybe Forbes, that Greenspan was the cause of the recession or contributed to it by loosening too much credit (thereby increasing liquidity)before the turn of the millenium (1999 or so). I'm not an economist or understand economics (though strive to) so don't quote me on this.
  15. I woke up in a bizarre parallel universe a couple of mornings ago. It looks just like the normal one but something's different. In this parallel universe, we see headlines like this: Bill Clinton Urges U.S. to Support Bush . "Whatever our politics at this hour, we all should want them and their commander in chief to know that we're praying for them and pulling for them, for their success in their mission, for their safety, for as little loss of life as possible." --quote from Bill Clinton at a fund-raising performance of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, March 25, 2003 Of course, there's the Bill O'Reilly comment concerning weapons. In the end I expect O'Reilly will eat his words. "(I)f the Americans go in and overthrow Saddam Hussein and it's clean, he has nothing, I will apologize to the nation, and I will not trust the Bush administration again." ---spoken by Bush's biggest TV booster Bill O'Reilly, the Fox News guy, on March 18 on ABC's Good Morning America
  16. UW or some other university should offer a graduate seminar course to discuss Muffy's writing. There's so many damn layers to it, so many meanings to be gleaned from a single line of her writing. And the misspellings? 'Hummor', how much fun can you have with that?

  18. There doesn't seem to be any absolute right or wrong regarding many situations we face today. Each decision will carry with it the seeds of both. I happen to believe in the deterrent effect of being armed especially as it pertains to residential protection. The graphic power of a displayed weapon is sometimes enough to stop assailants. Unfortunately, this same display tends to strike fear in just about anyone because most reasonable people recognize the lethal aspect of that weapon. It is a conundrum but I believe that prohibition will cause more problems than provide a solution. I do believe, however, that crime should be dealt with in a multi-pronged approach as opposed to the simple solution of expanding police powers. Your most important weapon is your mind, whether you are in the mountains, the street, or at home.
  19. A narcotics traffic stop on the Downtown Connector turned deadly Saturday afternoon when a man climbed over the interstate railing, fell about 35 feet and was decapitated on a wrought-iron fence, Atlanta police said. Officers in a marked car stopped the man about 4:30 p.m., as he drove south on the interstate above Auburn Avenue. The man, who has not been identified, stopped his vehicle and tried to flee by climbing over the railing, Lt. Danny Agan said. Police still are investigating whether the man jumped or fell off the raised interstate. "This is a new one for me in 29 years," Agan said. The decapitation shocked people who work in the neighborhood. Gary White, an income tax preparer, came out of his office when he heard the commotion. "It's surreal," White said. Agan said narcotics officers had been trailing the man for much of the day. Agan did not know if the officers who tried to arrest the man would be placed on administrative leave. "This is not something normally covered under the [standard operating procedure] of the department," he said. pic 1 pic 2 pic 3 Source The original source was AccessAtlanta.com( AccessAtlanta.com ) I guess the question is, is this real or is it PhotoShop?
  20. Bill O'Reilly - America's "Pinhead" Joe Lolli December 10, 2003 I watched Bill O'Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor” lie to his viewers last night over what the Clinton "Assault Weapons Ban" (AWB) says. Mr. O'Reilly claimed that the public supports the AWB because it “keeps your neighbors from owning bazookas and machineguns in their homes”. But those type weapons have been illegal for almost 3/4 of a century. And the AWB has nothing to do that that. The Clinton AWB only makes guns that "LOOK" like military assault weapons illegal and has had no impact on preventing or reducing crime in the ten years of its existence. Anyway, here's what I sent to O'Reilly: Hey Pinhead, The phony "assault weapons ban" is not about bazookas and machineguns... those things have been illegal since 1934. A bazooka is a rocket launcher. A machine gun is a battle weapon that fires numerous shots with one pull of the trigger. Both have been illegal for normal unlicensed citizens to own for almost 70 years. What the 1994 Clinton AWB is about is banning rifles that merely LOOK like military weapons but function just like any other normal semi-automatic hunting rifle, i.e. firing just one shot with each pull of the trigger. In Switzerland, they actually REQUIRE the head of every household to own and maintain a REAL military-style fully automatic battle rifle. Bill, it’s been ten years since the ban was implemented... so can you show me the stats that where the AWB has reduced any crimes? You can't find any stats because there aren't any. The banning of these assault weapons has made NO DIFFERENCE in assaults, murders or any other violent crimes. What's really needed here is a redefinition of terms. Remember the Korean shopkeepers defending their homes and property in East L.A. during the Rodney King riots? The only homes and businesses that were left standing were the ones where their owners stood guard holding their very intimidating looking "homeland defense" weapons, like AR-15s and police style Riot Shotguns.("assault weapons" to you pinheads... or "property and life insurance" weapons for those fending off the looters and vandals that would have otherwise destroyed everything these people created.) The real victims of this anti-gun law were all the shopkeepers and homeowners that DIDN'T have a homeland defense weapon during the riots and were prevented from buying one because the People's Republic of California requires a ten day waiting period before they would be allowed to take their new weapon home with them. That was the real gun crime in L.A. during the riots. So Bill, the next time you want to have GOA's Larry Pratt on your show, why not try actually listening to what he has to say instead of simply pushing your "Howard Dean is flip-flopping" agenda. Besides, nobody cares! Here’s a hint - Howard Dean is a politician! Just like Bush or Clinton before him, Dean is going to tell folks what he thinks they want to hear. In 1992 Dean was running for Governor in a state where honest law abiding adult citizens are allowed to carry a firearm CONCEALED on their person, anywhere in the state WITH NO GOVERNMENT SANCTION! So, there you are, sitting in the in same anti-gun city that has just prosecuted an honest citizen for using a firearm to shoot a burglar in within the confines of his baby's bedroom in his own home and you are using a Dean campaign pledge made in the nation's most gun friendly state eleven years later as a hammer in front of a national audience that would actually prefer that the AWB expire. Bill, get a clue! source
