  1. Question for this morning... What's in the back of your SUV? A quick inventory of my GMC 'Bourbon shows: 1 Walrus 4-season tent 1 Mtn bike w/ flat tire 1 backpack 1 old fleece jacket 1 roll duct tape 2 flashlights (one needs new batt) 1 toolbox 2 marine batteries 2 kids' lifejackets assorted stuff/junk It's like a closet that you can take with you!
  2. j_b and Goat. I'm looking at the times of your last posts. You guys need to get laid! Speaking of tree cutting, I was surprised to read recently about how much of the cleared land in the US has been returned to forest. Goat's got a point that if rowcrops "go organic," and more and more land continues to be re-forested and forever lost as cropland, we will have a harder time feeding ourselves in a few decades. (Oh yeah, and if Jim is successful in taking agriculture's water away from them, things'll be even worse.)
  3. Yeah, everybody stay away from Prague. It's a terrible place. You wouldn't like it. I'll keep ya posted from time to time and let you know if things change. (Damn, that is a wimpy looking winking smily.)

Hey SC, You dismissed trask's statement about DDT being a good mosquito killer as a joke, but it's true. And I remember reading a year or two ago that some scientists were saying that the increasing rates of malaria in the 3rd world could be reduced significantly and safely, if DDT were carefully applied in very small amounts in and around living quarters.

If yr SUV ain't got skid plates on the sensitive bits underneath... then you probably aren't really takin' it off-road anyhoo.

    I buy fruit

peel em and freeze em in ziplok bags, even if they're brown. Then you can do what Iain suggests anytime as a frozen smoothie.

mattp, do you believe that this headline is anything other than a straightforward statement of fact? It doesn't appear to connote support for either party to me.
  10. Five pounds...the actual gain has occurred two weeks after the eating. Already back to running, but 3 weeks off caused the knees to hurt on the first long run. We need a fatboy emoticon.

I like this thread! We need to also start a new thread today about either 1) global warming or 2) Israel and Palestine. On one subject I totally support Goat (and j_b's full of it), and on the other the roles are reversed. Speaking of being full of it, that SUV article that catbird linked is a bunch of bull. People who want to pretend they're single buy sportscars. I drive an old suburban because I want the room for my crap, and because I want to increase the odds of surviving a head-on with a logging truck. The price of gasoline, relative to the other products we buy, will take care of what people drive. Expecting something other than market forces to change what people drive is silly.

What oil producers are scared of him? Kuwait? Which ones appear to feel beholden to us today? This is line of thinking is a step away from conspiracy theory.

j_b, yer livin' in a Gore-biased dream-world. The 'inventor of the info superhighway' made false claims galore. He came off wooden because of his own lack of charisma, not because of the news media. Then he tried to act tough, injecting the word "fight" into every speech. That was negative and dumb, and was his own (or his handlers') political miscalculation.

Goat got a ! He brings up an important point. Bush's job is to be Leader. That doesn't require brain surgery training, it requires leadership and communication skills. Ronald R was certainly no brainchild, and worked comparatively few hours, but beat his successor hands-down in leadership and communication skills.

  19. There's A race of men that don't fit in, A race that can't stay still; So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will. They range the field and they rove the flood, And they climb the mountain's crest; Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood, And they don't know how to rest. If they just went straight they might go far, They are strong and brave and true; But they're always tired of the things that are, And they want the strange and new. They say: "Could I find my proper groove, What a deep mark I would make!" So they chop and change, and each fresh move Is only a fresh mistake. And each forgets, as he strips and runs With a brilliant, fitful pace, It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones Who win in the lifelong race. And each forgets that his youth has fled, Forgets that his prime is past, Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead, In the glare of the truth at last. (Robert Service of course)

Can anyone disagree with this statement?: From a strategy standpoint, George Bush Sr.'s failure to press on to Baghdad and remove Saddam represents one of the US's biggest military mistakes in the 20th century.

Much-older bro and sis loaded me up on everything from beach boys to Motown. The Motown made more of an impression on me as a kid, because I think it's got more feeling to it: Jackie Wilson, Four Tops, Supremes, Otis...

This is becoming a debate about what shade of green is green. I still maintain that what matt was originally talking about is the fact that the normally-liberal press is unquestioning & apparently supportive of a Republican president as he prepares for war with Iraq. And that would be weird, except for the huge amount of interest and influence that AIPAC and Israel have on our nation's politics and press. And this war will do a tremendous favor to Israel's security. We have sold our objectivity over the Israel-Palestine problem (and its importance in solving the Muslim problems with the US) so far down the river, it has become irretrievable.
