At some point you have to make a choice: Are you going to suck McDonalds dry by suing it and regulating it to death, or are you going to work with it and make sure it pays back with employment, commerce, and tax income?
-
Yep, like that tax check you're about to get. Jim, go back to reading your Hillary biography.

I think the real answer to matt's question is based on your personality and what you do for a living. People who employ large numbers of people, or who manage large tasks or organizations, or who manage significant capital investments are the "parents" in society---they are responsible for keeping "the railroad running." They tend to be Republican. On the other hand, academics, lawyers, union employees tend to be liberal because they benefit from backing a system of "us" and "them" in which the "us" are the majority, and this majority want to live like children. More time off, more money, more control of other people's stuff---and we want the government to do it all for us. The problem is, there is an end to the government money tit, and to the redistribution-of-wealth-by-lawyering. And unfortunately it requires the conservative "parents" of society to pull us out of the mud, after the children have almost sucked us dry.

So I bought one of those teeny mp3 players this weekend, figuring it will help ease the monotony of long training runs. But since I have no mp3s , now I need to download 'em. Can anyone tell me which service is the best...musicmatch, emusic, or other? I want to be able to access a wide selection of music all from one site. Any good advice appreciated.

Question inspired by trask's pic that he shared from his Eric Estrada collection... I'm seein' way too many extreme-whitening jobs out there these days.
-
so Dru, does this speak to my point about the load that an adopted son of gay males would carry?
-
Great...I thought trask and I were the only straight guys in this veritable online bath-house, and now I'm questioning him...

Bounty! Hell, I'm for it. Cheaper than other military solutions. With $25MM on Saddam's head, SOMEBODY is going to drop the dime on him.

Thanks for buying me these cool glasses from REI, Dad!

All of us of British descent unfortunately are pre-wired for this type of talk, you know. "Yes, well, there I was on safari, face to face with the largest rhino in all of Lesotho, seconds away from death if I missed my shot..."

is there really gold here, Dr. Smith?

Caveman touches on a question that I wasn't going to ask, but WTF...here we go: What are the stats on gay male relationships lasting 15 or 20 years? Are they comparable to married couples who have kids?
-
I dunno, Dru, maybe it makes no difference. I just picture different scenes that happen in life as a kid grows up, lay that template on it, and go "man, that would be tough!" My point is don't delude yourselves with thinking the kid's environment would be the way the world should be versus the way it is.
-
I must admit that I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about this issue. I agree that kids are going to see their environment as 'normal.' One thing that has only dawned on me recently as a relatively older parent is that virtually everything my wife and I do and say is going into the little databanks of our kids...good and bad. Doesn't it make intuitive sense that if you want a kid to grow up with the highest likelihood for success, particularly in seeking a good mate and successfully making a life with that mate, then you ought to start with an environment that is a likely strong resemblance of his future? And since he's likely to be straight, shouldn't his childhood be filled with the love of both a mother and a father?? Shouldn't he know just a little about living with women (which is different from being around them at school)? Simplistic thinking maybe, but that's where I'm coming from.

I didn't even read the beginning of this thread, only the latest discussion about whether same-sex couple adoption makes sense. Forgive me, offwidth, but it is a broad fucking leap between supporting people who are gay, and parenting. I'll stand by my gay friends till the last dog dies, I think the idea of morality or religion having anything to do with homosexuality is dumb. But I don't think that placing children into same-sex couple homes makes common sense. It's all about that little kids' world, not the couples' world and society as a whole. Maybe the macro world is wrong and unfair...don't crap on the micro world of the kid because you want to dream a better world.

I forgot all about something wild. Melanie Griffith with the best rejoiner ever to the BS line "I've never done anything like this before." "WELL I HAVE."
