A little late to the game, but someone mentioned the ELF. I thought it was a mistake to cut down the GMO poplars at Oregon State awhile back. I believe that poplar farming is the solution to many of our forest planning issues, particularly for paper production. Poplar is the ultimate "utility" for a great many environmental issues, from paper production to landfill stabilization.

climbing w/ scots is just dandy. The haggis gu flavor is exceptional.

Judging by the wailing and at times shreaking generated from aggro gully on Sunday, I would say white wedding is not that dude's favorite climb.

Clearly you didn't see my TR about free soloing the ISS in a day. Let's see Mal Duff or Mr. McWhoever get his carcass up that thing in wool and knickers. It will only take you a few days here to realize the hardcores on this site rarely post at all, while the more mediocre ones spray away w/ glee. Remember there's a wide range of skill on this board, from those just getting on their first cascade peak to some of the most experienced climbers in the N.W. climbing the serious stuff. And somehow we get along occasionally!

And gummy worms. Make great abalakov cord when things get grim. You can also signal down a plane by spelling help with them. (but snaffles will devour in short order, but then you have new source of food (see above for snafflehound steak!))

well we'll have to change all the weyerhauser signs from "trespassers will be prosecuted" to "shot to death". Has a nice ring to it, I suppose. "But he was putting sugar in a gas tank" would be a difficult excuse in front of some dead kid's parents in court when he was blown away by some guy who was protecting company property. Dunno, I'm certainly not sold on the ELF all the time, but I think death is a little much.

were those the two who were going to be married? I'd be freaked as a guide w/ two totally new climbers as ropemates on the mountain!

If you have been through the RMI routine I would assume you have had some rudimentary training in self-arrest (only a day perhaps) and some basic roped travel. This is good stuff to start with, and probably could serve you well on some easier mountains here in the PNW. If you are interested more in general mountaineering on snow/ice and you were comfortable on the DC route (I assume) you can probably head up the easy stuff on Adams, Baker, Hood, etc w/o much assistance (but go with someone else of equal or greater ability). I would put in some time on these kinds of mountains to develop your decision making abilities in a mountain environment (something I am sure you did not learn at all on your RMI adventure). Then you can start adding technical challenges and build up that way. Living in Oregon, I found Mt. Hood to be an excellent teaching mountain when I was getting started. You can start on a technically easy route and work up to some pretty fierce climbs progressively. Again it would be difficult to do this consistently from Atlanta. Also, heavy physical conditioning will make everything easier! Have fun.

I wear a helmet at Smith almost regardless of the route, even though it seems like quite a few do not. I think back to 98 when there was an accident on Titanium Jag. Leader fell back onto the belay then fell again and cracked his head open. Even with members from mountain rescue right there to evac him, there was little hope for him surviving such severe trama. Can't say for sure, but a helmet would most likely have kept him alive. It's a personal call and I don't get on peoples' cases when they don't wear one. Though I do in an alpine situation where I will have to haul your unconcious jello-brained ass out. I wish TNF would stop showing those Alex Lowe shots of him climbing tough ice helmetless. Maybe it was a safe situation but seems like they could set an example.

any of those smith nubbin routes where you start wondering what the hell is keeping you from falling. somehow you levitate up the route.

I've seen that Smith supplement around but never had a copy... is it on the web as a PDF somewhere?

Unfortunately Ralph Nadar, while extremely intelligent and thoughtful, is not "presidential material" in the traditional sense. He just doesn't have the requisite stage presence and slick self-promotional material. It is a shame.
