Public transportation works in Europe because people have learned over time that using it does not infringe on their freedom to move around town quickly. The train systems like British Rail are set up really well to interface inter city transport with intra city transport. The really fast trains only stop in the big towns, and you can hop on slower ones that make more stops to cruise around within towns. Or there is a subway. Rail lines in France don't go through every dinker town out there either. The TGV doesn't have to slow down all the time, since they put in purpose-built lines with few curves way out in farmers' fields and stuff. It's a really cool system if people in the states could just get over the my car is my personality crap.

skiers and climbers often have different perspectives on terrain too, since you're not necessarily skinning up the slope you're going to ski, and you're looking for avi terrain by default when skiing as that's where the goods are. Climbers might be hunting out ridgelines and have other options, and tend to view the hazardous terrain from below, rather than from above.

yeah I was just throwing out an idea, not saying it's perfect or anything. I don't know anything about econ. if it was not apparent already. Just sick of seeing clogged freeways all over Portland and people don't seem to be thinking outside the box at all. Just sit in traffic not able to do anything. It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing either. If people who could commute to work by bike just did it once a week, the numbers start to add up. I'm a vegetarian but I still wear leather climbing boots and petroleum-based clothes.

I'm willing to pay the extra to drive to Pole Creek. I am well-enough off to be able to afford expensive luxuries like climbing, so I'm happy to give that extra money, esp if it is somehow earmarked directly to improve transportation. Maybe I'm just a communist though

if the price for gas is steep enough, people will move to avoid 30 minute commutes. That's still in biking range too. Yeah it sounds pretty naive and simplistic but it seems to work in England, for example. When I was living there you really had to think hard about if you needed to drive somewhere or not, and this was out in the northern country where distances can be far.

One poor excuse used in an avi accident on Mt. Hood back in '98 was the "extreme danger" sign posted at the trailhead was interpreted as being for a previous day

Right on scott. Money's the only thing that gets idiots to listen.. $5 or more a gallon (for non-commercial use) will get some hybrids on the road and people in the bus and on bikes. Driving should be an event, not a day-to-day like brushing your teeth or something.
