  3. Is this guy transparent? I swear I can see right through him? He knows that Roe v. Wade is a lightning rod. Maybe it'll deflect all the attention off of the Iraq situation? And the Democrats will flounder in their lack of focus. But who in his right mind would want to inherit this mess?

I believe that both legal and illegal immigration are issues to be addressed now. Otherwise, it seems, if the problems become more daunting then the radicals will come out of the woodwork. How should it be addressed? Don't know. But for starters, maybe we could continue to support American developmental aid programs abroad, for instance, family planning programs and economic development. Let's use a 'rising tide' philosophy to this problem and 'raise all boats'. BTW, did anyone look at the federal budget allocation graph? Personally, I believe that the 'wall' is more symbolic than functional, but that's my opinion. I do agree with stout that the countries of origin have to address their issues rather than have them rely on the US as a refuge. Sure it's a refuge but don't most countries allow limited immigration on skill sets and other useful criteria? I agree that UNCONTROLLED immigration is a problem. Almost everyone will disagree but maybe we can form a new union, perhaps a Greater America. Is this bad? I do somewhat disagree with Joseph et. al. concerning employers. In principle, I agree but in reality what are the numbers of companies who hire illegally? Isn't this just a kneejerk pushbutton reaction. The PC training is kickin' in. Who are the innocent victims?

Someone might find this link useful . It's based on data from 2004 but gives an informative visual. Click on the pic. Oh, I guess it's been updated for 2007 at the enclosed link. Check out the difference in military vs. non-military spending in 2004 and 2007.

  9. The fact that he was tried and found guilty in a German court of law pretty much says it all. He got the maximum sentence of five years for the 14 counts against him. Apparently, there is speech considered so vile and provocative that it warrants this punishment. Doesn't this amount to blatant censorship? If the evidence is so undeniable wouldn't most people just laugh and consider this man a fool? What rational person would take his ideas seriously? If Martin Luther was alive today, he would probably be labeled an anti-Semite and consequently thrown into prison.
  10. I don't believe 'deserter' can be used to qualify him. Apparently, he didn't desert or go AWOL but he did miss a troop movement to go to Iraq. I don't believe one person will change anything. It's whether that one person is a believable figure who stands as an example, a political icon of sorts. I also don't believe he will become a martyr but will be sentenced and will spend his time in obscurity, neglected by MSM but perhaps kept alive in the blogsphere. But I have been known to be wrong before.

E pluribus unum. Aren't all opinions valid, not necessarily to be acted upon, but to be taken into consideration as expressing a legitimate need emanating from an individual? Or are you of the opinion that some voices have to be silenced because you deem them to be invalid?
  12. I hate injustice. Period. But what is truth? Should we keep an open, inquisitive mind, asking questions, revising our theories of what the world is? Is history once written, set in stone? I get set in my ways but occasionally I get the bug. What if everything I thought was true, was actually questionable?

  14. We were all busy talking about a loony, lovesick, diaper-wearing astronaut while this happened. The case against 1st Lt Ehren Watada ended in mistrial. The case seemed cut-and-dried with respect to missing troop movement but not so clear with the charge of contempt towards officials, specifically President Bush. Conduct unbecoming a officer and gentleman? Hmm... Well his actions ended a potentially promising military career and I bet he questions the wisdom of his decisions every day. I think it was a foolish move but it still took some guts to actually stand for his beliefs especially in a monolithic institution such as the military. http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/020807A.shtml
  15. In the court of public opinion, it's clearcut. What happened based on this media report was an old man got roughed up, an injustice. But did this other man commit a crime? Jail for German Holocaust denier
  16. Who benefits from what was alleged to have been said? Is Iran really itching to get into a war? With Israel? With the US? Who's beating the war drums here? Does the government of Iran want to go to the brink of armed confrontation or is it certain elements within the government? Do the people want to go to war?

  23. Stated in article that depictions of torture have increased dramatically. If Milgram experiment is any indicator and viewership of programs such as 24 are popular, that would suggest that under the thin veneer of civilation lurks a barbarous and cruel spirit that finds its release under the aegis of authority. The justification being that the ruthlessness of our enemies have to be matched by ours. Germany under the Nazis showed this, highly cultured yet so warlike (and all that war entails).
